Default Metformin and appetite

Since I started on Metformin my appetite has changed , I'm rarely hungry so I only eat something to have my tablets with. Anyone else found the same thing or is it just a coincidence?

I was just going to post about this today!

I was on 500-1000mg before I was Dx'ed as IR. I didn't notice a difference at those doses.

After I was Dx'ed my doc upped me to 1500-2000mg a day, and I am like hardly hungry ever now... and I've only been on 2000mg for half a week. But my appetite has changed dramatically.

For me, I find that it comes and goes. Like, it the mornings, I usually am kind of hungry, but generally at lunch and dinner and I'm not. Sometimes I can't even muster up the appetite to eat something to take my pills with (and those are generally not very good nights).

Yes, I have completely lost my appetite; I know that it is not good not to eat, but I can't eat when I am not hungry.

I've been on 2000mg for a week and a half now. At first I had no appetite because I felt constantly like I was seasick. Yesterday was the first day I didn't feel sick and actually felt hungry, but when I went to eat something I was full pretty quickly. I've lost about 8 lbs already. The ONLY side effect that I'm not complaining about. Now if I would just ovulate...

I guess I'm the weird one. I've been on Metformin for 2 full weeks now and if anything my appetite has increased. I've not really been sick, though - only a little bit of nausea on the first day I started taking two pills. I suppose if that is the only side effect I really shouldn't complain....

Yup! When I was on met I had very little appetite. It was great because it was like a 'clean slate' so I could concentrate on what my body needed, rather than what I thought it wanted. Regular exercise has the same effect for me also.

I guess I'm weird too...I've been more hungry. The nausea has been awful.

I read somewhere that when it starts working and your insulin and metabolism are regulating themselves your body has to re-configure how much and what you need to eat. Maybe that's why some of us eat more and others eat less...

Yea I can't even eat something to take my pills with, I get so Nauseated. I also am in the bathroom so much I don't want to eat in fear that i'll be up all night in the bathroom. That's really why we lose weight on it. We can't eat and everything we do eat immediatly goes through us into the toilet lol.Oh well, even with the nausea and frequent trips to the bathroom, oh and the fatigue, I feel it will be worth it so i'll keep on truckin, things could be a hell of a lot worse!!! I have only been on Met for about five days now so I'll give it time.

I don't have any nausea or anything, but def no appetite. If I ate when i was hungry I might eat once a day. I'm kind of forcing myself to eat (healthy foods and proportions). I follow the nutrisystem diet- so I know it's good, but now I'm scared I'm forcing myself to eat too much. I know I need more than one meal... I'm not sure what to do now. At least it's a welcomed problem... it's easier to maintain a healthy diet when you're not craving chips and chocolate every few hours!

I have had a decreased appetite since starting metformin as well. As a nurse, I believe this is because my body is now actually able to use the food I give it. Before met, I would crave and eat large amounts of carbs. That is because my body could not use the carbs effectively but now that it can I don't need to eat as much. I do have to force myself to eat one at least one of my 3 meals but it is getting easier. For me, to prevent side effects likes nausea and heart burn, I try not to allow myself to get hungry. This also helps with portion control since I am not starving and feel the need to eat half of everything in the kitchen. I used to, for years, drink 6-8 cans of Dr. Pepper a day and could not live without them. I was not a nice person if I did not have my Dr. Pepper! Now I only drink about 3 a week! I don't even miss them most of the time. I'm sure this has helped me lose some of the 8 pounds I have lost since starting met a month ago.
