Two years ago I was diagnosed with PCOS, and the doctor put me on metformin, soon after I lost my health insurance and could no longer afford it. I only ended up taking it for a little over a month. Since then I have been on BCPs, and nothing else. Now that I have my health insurance back, should I ask my doctor to put me back on it, or is it unnecessary to be on both? Thanks!
I was just about to post the same question.... I really hope to get some good advice. My doctor said I could do both, but I didnt want to when I saw him last. Now I am thinking maybe I should. However, I am afraid to do Met again because of the horrible stomach pains and diarrhea it gave me, not to mention that I just could not drink at all on it, without being miserably sick. I need to lose about 20 lbs though, and was hoping that Met could help. It didnt the first time, but I didnt stay on it more than 8 weeks.
You can do just BCP's or both. Depends on you symptoms... I am a thin cyster so my insulin is normal and I didn't need anything to regulate it. For me it is mostly just high testosterone so I really only need BCP. So I personally only like taking Met for TTC, then I take BCP when not TTC or Preggers.

Don't know if this helps w/ the decision to take or not to take, but metformin is now on the list of Wal-Mart and Kroger's $4 prescription meds. I didn't have to present any insurance information when I got my rx filled today.
I'm actually going of BCP b/c of cost. My doc said the two could work together to regulate my period, but that it might not be necessary to take both... the met could cover it. I can get met for $4 but my BCP was $25 - even higher than that the first couple months of the year while I was paying my deductible for insurance.
Thanks,(I switched names, long story), I am glad to now its cheaper now, when I was taking it before it was ridiculous how much it was without insurance. Now I have insurance though, and can afford it, hopefully this doctor will be as responsive as my last.
