Metformin and bone density I've been on Metformin now for a little over a year. Back in January I FINALLY started loosing weight...to date I've lost about 30 pounds. My energy went up, I was exercising at least 4 days a week...I felt great.
Last weekend I went out dancing with friends wearing new high heeled shoes (stupid!). I fell and ended up breaking my leg. My tibia to be exact. That's the second strongest bone in your body and all the nurses at the orthopedic doctor's office were surprised to hear I did that just by falling on the dance floor.
I've never broken anything before and it's not like this is the first time I've fallen down! I seem to recall my endocrinologist telling me to make sure I eat dairy/calcium every day because metformin either leaches the bones of calcium or inhibits the absorption or something like that. A quick search of the net hasn't turned up anything.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I visit the orthopedic doc tomorrow and would like to discuss this with him...he's the type that responds better if he can tell you've done your research.
Thanks!!
Cory
