Default Metformin and breastfeeding

Hi all. I'm sorry if this is a topic that has been thrashed out repeatedly and everyone is sick of it, but I've been away from this site for a while and I don't have time to look through all the past threads (unfortunately).

I am having a great deal of trouble controlling my weight and have lost none of the weight I gained in pregnancy (which was sitting on top of all my previous weight anyway), this despite demand feeding my baby. I am really keen to try metformin (I haven't used it before), and am wondering if anyone knows the skinny (pardon the bad pun) on whether I am likely to be prescribed this whilst still breastfeeding?

The only medication I've had before was cyproterone acetate to control my hirsutism (still a problem, incidentally - I had heard the odd story about how pregnancy 'cured' this for some people... well, not for me)! I had to come off this at least 6 months before we started trying for a baby, as it would likely have affected the foetus.

Anyway, hope to hear back from some of you soon. If anyone is in NZ and knows what the medical profession is like about this here, it would be useful. I was diagnosed while living in London and have not sought any treatment since I've been home.

Thanks,

Em

I had been wondering about this because hopefully someday I will have the chance to breastfeed. It is my understanding that women on met stop taking it while they are breastfeeding and start back once the baby is weaned. I would check with your doctor just to make sure. Maybe there is something else you can take while breastfeeding or maybe a low dose of met is safe? Wish I could be of more help.

I don't belive you can take it while breastfeeding but you should really consult your doctor.

There are some doctors who are OK with it and some who are not. MY OB was not but my endo was. I took met the entire time we breastfed - 13 1/2 months - and my baby showed no adverse signs.

There is no proof it is harmful but no studies to show it isn't... so it's kind of one of those risks vs. benefits thing...

I took it the entire time I was pregnant, I didn't see much point in stopping while breastfeeding. But I weaned when I started Avandia because if little is know about met in pregnancy/breastfeeding, less is known about Avandia (and actos...)

How old is your baby? My weight didn't seem to want to go anywhere until 4 months PP, if I recall... at that point it just started dropping off. I expected faster results with the nursing but it happened later than I expected.

You can take it while breastfeeding as long as you have a doctor that's up on the latest studies and feels they provide enough proof. http://www.greenjournal.org/cgi/content/abstract/105/6/1437 Maybe that link will help. I am taking it while breastfeeding with the support of my endo. The studies done show while it is excreted into breast milk, the amounts are clinically insignificant. No long term studies have been done. HTH.
