Default Metformin and Breastfeeding

Hi everyone I couldn't find a post regarding Metformin while breastfeeding and am trying to find out some info on it. I had great success with Metformin with conceiving my two boys and came off of it both times after the first trimester. I did fine after the first one was born and didn't go back on it until after he was weaned. But I am starting to have some IR and now am needing to go back on it. I am trying to find anyone that was on it while breastfeeding, how they did and how much they took. My Doctor is new to PCOS (I've been diagnosed for about 6 years) but is extremely open to new ideas and things that will help. I want to make sure to give him as much info as I can. Thank you so much for your help.

I dont know much about this but personally i wouldnt take anything while breastfeeding. Everything you take into your body goes into the milk. Maybe you should start weaning your baby so you can start metformin again.

I copied this from the Sticky "FAQ about Metformin"

"8. What about taking Met while breastfeeding?

Once again this decision needs to be made at the discretion of each woman. The studies I have seen to date indicate that about 0.28-.4 % of the drug passes to the infant, leaving it well within the acceptable limits. You can read articles/studies on this here:

Metformin Use by Nursing Mothers Does Not Affect Infants: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/537186

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q..._uids=12436333

http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/...0804_fm-6.html"

I just started Metformin and I am TTC. So one day, I will have to cross this bridge as well.

Best Wishes!

I took metformin all the way through my first pregnancy and the entire time I was breastfeeding (7 months). I made it a point to get a clearance from my doc as soon as I got preggo if it would be okay to continue to take metformin throughout the pregnancy and while nursing.

I'm not on metformin yet, but see my RE today to discuss it. I am currently breastfeeding and did tons of research on metformin beforehand. I feel very safe taking it while breastfeeding. I even contacted LLL to ask someone to look it up in Hales. Some women actually take metformin to increase their milk supply - though many go off it if they take it for this reason due to the side effects. (There are other ways to increase supply without the side effects, but for IR, there's not a heck of a lot of other things we can do!) I don't know what dosage of met I'll be on since I actually do have normal cycles but have super high insulin levels, which may be the reason I miscarry so often. Despite it being safe, I'm going to start on a low dose and move up more slowly than the norm.

*Edited to add: Saw the dr and now have a presciption for metformin. I'm only doing 500 since my reasons for the metformin is different than most. (Insulin resistance - BUT for reason of needing it when I get pg to decrease miscarriage risk. I ovulate and get pg fine but have trouble staying pg).

Hi everyone, I saw the Doctor on Monday and he started me on Met ext.release. 500 mg. He said he thinks it might be more efficient for me. If I tolerate it well I can increase it to 1000 mg in a month.

Cali Mom- what dose were you on while breastfeeding

I just stopped breastfeeding my dd and she is 13 months old. I was on Met all through my pregnancy and the whole year I nursed her. I reasearched it carefully and my dr. okayed it. Met is okay while nursing. Good luck!

The lactation consultant who taught my breastfeeding class did her master's thesis on PCOS and she STRONGLY recommended that women with PCOS (a) remain on Met while pregnant, and (b) continue taking Met while breastfeeding (it often helps with supply).

I went off of Met about a week before my c-section (precaution prior to surgery), and didn't go back on for a few weeks after my delivery (was waiting to see my doc for a new scrip). I noticed a signficant increase in milk supply when I went back on Met at 1/2 my pregnancy dosage, and another increase in supply when I ramped back up to my full dosage.

hth,

DK
