Default Metformin and Dairy ...

Hi Ladies,

Sorry - question for you ... I've just started on 3 x 500mg metformin a day, but the past week (I was only on 2 x 500mg) I have noticed that whenever I have any dairy products, milk, chocolate etc, I end up with really bad stomach ache ... now I am a milk freak, love my milk - has anyone else had this with metformin, and can anyone advise a decent (milk tasting) alternative to 'normal' cow milk that's not going to hurt my tummy so badly - I don't want to stop taking metformin as I really do believe that it's going to do me some good ...

Any help would be appreciated ladies ...

Thanks

Shelly xxxx

I would give it some time...I always feel sick a couple weeks after upping it.

They do have refrigerated rice milk now--Rice Dream--vanilla flavored. It doesn't compare to regular milk but it's edible.

I think milk products make my stomach more bloated but I'm already off of gluten so I just can't bring myself to stay off of dairy yet for an extended amount of time, sigh.

I can't have milk on met either. I never really did adjust to dairy and have been on met for a couple years. For some it makes them dairy intolerant.
I didn't have the same result with soy milk. Although I don't advocate consuming too much soy.

The only dairy I could have on met was cheese. When I did an IR diet study at the local university I came off met and included a lot more dairy and felt so much better.

I didn't have this with dairy...but with anything fatty i end up with horrible tummy aches and diarrhea. It's awful...so i've just really been steering clear of anything with too much fat content. Perhaps it's full cream milk and full fat cheese you are using etc...too much fat maybe? I drink skim milk, and eat low fat cheese and low fat yoghurt and haven't had a problem with any of that...maybe give that a go?

I have to take my Met with a glass of milk, or I will be sick all night and day. If I use regular milk (2% what we normally buy) it makes me have a lot of gas, but organic milk is what is working best for me. No gas, bloating or anything. Try the organic milk.
