Default metformin and decreased side effects

Ok, I haven't been around because I'm now the roud new owner of a collection of kidney stones which have kept me entertained a-plenty.
My question, have you ever gotten to the point where you can take metformin without food?
I have missed some doses because either I wasn't eating a meal or I forgot to take the met with the meal, I am scared to take it alone but am hoping that maybe after a while you are actually able to take it alone without major complications.
What have been your experiences? What do you do if you forget your dose with food or you don't have the meal? I am taking 500 mg 3 times per day.

I can take mine without food, but I'm on Met ER, which is a lot gentler on the stomach. At the worst, I feel slightly nausiated for a few hours.

A lot of other people say that milk works fine in the place of food.

Nope! The first few days after increasing my dose to 1500 mgs everything made me sick, even taking my pills WITH food. But that was only for maybe 2-3 days. I haven't gotten my appetite back, but I haven't been getting sick, either. Now I just make sure to take my dose at the same time every day, and it doesn't matter if I have food or not.

You might want to try taking one pill without food and see how it goes. If it makes you sick, then at least you'll know not to do it again.

I will, I might also ask my Dr about ER Met, I've heard/read good things about it.

I always take it without food or anything, i just haven't had a very good appetite lately and haven't been able to eat, but i don't want to miss the met so i just take it anyway... i take it at the same time every day three times a day, and i'm fine, if anything i just feel a bit sick for a while, but mostly i'm fine! hope this helps! cat

PS: I'm taking the regular metformin glucophage.... not the ER

I also have a no appetite onmetforim if I take all 3 tabs per day... nausea etc..
went back to two tabs per day last two weeks as I was in fear of going underweight and I am TTC so that would not be good.
Hi Caitriona! I am from ireland too.

Hey brener! where abouts in Ireland are you from? i'm in Dublin myself!
My appetite, has actually gone back to normal the last few days, but i think its because i'm stressed, and the usual overeating when stressed has just turned into a normal eating thing if you know what i mean! lol, anyways, i hope all this info helped you krazeydazey!

I am on 1500mg (500mg 3x daily) and sometimes I take with food, sometimes without if I forget. I have no appetite... so it is hard to always take with food. I also take it with milk occasionally. I haven't really had issues taking it on an empty stomach. My issues come when I eat carbs or too much sugar.

Thank you.
Well the pain in both sides remained even after the right side was clear of stones.
The Dr I was seeing has now insisted I stop both my meds (met and thyroid meds) to rule them out as causes.
I have still gotten pain but not as much, I also have cysts on my ovaries so I am trying to sort out what kind and whether they have anything to do with it.
I really hope it's not the met though.
