Default Metformin and depression?

I started taking Metformin about a month ago and last week I stepped up to taking 3 500mg tablets a day. I have suffered from depression/anxiety for a few years now but they have been under control with my antidepressants (clomipramine). However in the last week the depression and the horrible obsessive thoughts I get have come back and it really scares me and upsets me. I was just wondering if it could be the metformin causing this? I also take Dianette (contraception) tablets but these have been fine for about 4 months.

I hate feeling this way.

Wonder if anyone knows more. Thanks.

Hey there i'm not on any anti depressents although I wonder sometimes if I should be... I lead that shinny face example all through the day but then when alone with thoughts I feel BLAH half the time. Anyhow I've been on met for about 3-4 months now and yeah although I get depressed about weight and all that, I don't believe it's the met.. I've been through these cycles before.. At least I don't see any increase in the amount of times it happens.. Just things trigger like always and I get depressed. I don't know if that helps you at all, but good luck.

Are you watching your sugar levels? If you are not eating properly your sugar levels will spike and then drop like a rock. This is especially true with people on Met. Also the BCP's may have something to do with it. I found that some made me so depressed.

Hang in there!!

It's also possible that you need to change your anti-depressant. Sometimes, I think our body just gets to used to them and we need to shake it up. You probably should see your physician if you don't feel better soon, though. Santa's Baby may be on the right track in that your sugars may unbalanced from the additional gluc.

Default Metformin/depression

Hi,
I read an article about metformin that it lowers the amount of vitamin B12 in your body as a side effect and this can have a small affect on moods. It was suggested that you take a mutli-vitamin daily in addition to an extra B-Complex, separate the doses to allow maximum absorption of the vitamins in your body. Hope this helps!

What she said word for word lol

maybe its the mix of the anti depressients with the uping the metformin? or it might be a bad mix with all the meds or a little to much on your system right now? could be anxiety playing into it espeically if you have some stressful stuff going on in your life... talk it over with your dr and I hope you feel better soon *hugs*

Unhappy I feel the same

I started the Met just a few days ago, and since I started it I feel that depression comes to me.
Probably it is not related to Met, and just my way of recovering from miscarriage, but before starting the Met I thought that I almost recovered emotionally, but now it total

i agree with those that wonder if the metformin is causing depression... i have been on the meds for just under 3 months and have realized i have become very depressed... but no where in the information does it mention can cause depression...
why is this??
