Default Metformin dosage question

I've been on 1000 mg metformin since late August and now my doc wants me to go up to 2000 mg in hopes of triggering O. I know that for a lot of people increasing the dose suddenly, you can get pretty sick so I don't want to go to the 2000 right away, but I didn't know how I should increase it. For those of you on 1500 mg, do you take 500mg and then 1000 at another time, do you split one of the pills (750 mg twice a day) or do you take 500 mg 3 times a day?
On a related note, has increasing the dose ever proven helpful for triggering O? So far, I feel like I am noticing some differences, but no evidence of O with charting and my cycles are painfully long.

When I started met my doctor recommended 500mg twice a day (100mg total) with food for two weeks ten after two weeks I was to increase to 500mg three times a day (1500mg) with food. I did not really have any side effects. Because I take it with food its pretty easy for me to remember to take all three pills every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. My doctor and pharmacist told me that taking with food usually helps with side effects.

I started on 2000mg right away. I started exactly one month ago. The first two weeks were a little rough, felt nauseous/seasick all the time, but now it's not bad. I lost 11 pounds and O'd on CD 20 with a 15 day LP. Also should add that I am 5'7 and now 151 pounds - not insulin resistant either.

My dr wants me to take 2000 mg/day of met. The 1000 mg pills were so HUGE, however, I got the pharmacy to give me the 500 mg pills instead and just more of them. You CANNOT and shouldn't split the 1000 mg pills b/c they have a protective coating that helps with the extended release.

I have only made it up to 1500 mg a day, but two days ago started adding in another 500 mg and have been sick - mostly nausea and diarreah. I am now taking 500 mg with b-fast, 500 mg with lunch, and 1000 mg (two 500's) with dinner.

Good luck!

I started on 1000 mg, then increased to 1500 after two weeks, then 2000 after two more weeks. I had tried Metformin a year earlier, but that was not the time release kind and I had terrible side effects. The time release pills don't cause me any trouble and they restored me to a regular 34 day cycle. Cycle were anywhere from two to nine months between before this.

Thank you guys so much for the info. After hearing what you guys have said. I've decided to try going up to 2000/day (1000 am/pm) I felt pretty crappy this morning, just really tired and I didn't want to eat anything, but I am making sure to get food in me to keep from getting hypoglycemic. I am hopeful that I can get some Os going without any other outside help. It will be 1 year in Jan that my DH and I have been TTC so if I can't O by then, we'll try other options.
Thanks again.
