I want to continue my met throughout pregnancy. I am terrified that by quitting, my body will turn against me by making me gain WAY too much weight, therefore causing gestational diabetes. My doctors say to stop also but I dont feel right about it and will more than likely continue.

i posted in another thread about met and my pregnancies...
the last 3 pregnancies i had were the ones where met played a role.

1-was told to stop met so i did, pregnancy ended in miscarriage
2-was told to stop but didn't, took 1500mg entire 9 months=full term baby
3-was told to stop but didn't, pregnancy ended in miscarriage

as far as met keeping me from me 1st trimester miscarriage...can't say either way..i miscarried with it and i miscarried without it.

as far as met keeping me from getting GD, it didn't work. i got it and ended up taking insulin as well...but it did keep the baby from weighing 10-11lbs. my other GD babies, where i took no met, i delivered 10-11lbs babies.

hope that helps!

I have been going back and forth with this issue also. My OB. (who was also my RE) wants me to stay on the 2000mgs thru out my pregnancy. I started seeing an Endocrinologist at the begining of Nov. to closely watch for GD. She says she usually has women go off it after the 1st trimester. My post meal blood sugars have been good but my fasting insulin (first thing in the morning) have been alittle high. So I do an insulin shot b4 bed. Both Drs. have decided to keep me on it b/c it seems to be controlling my daytime bloodsugars. I guess there is no concrete evidence that it is harmful to the baby......so hopefully it keeps the GD away. HTH - Have a Great Pregnancy!!

I was told to stop taking it, when we found I out I was pregnant a week ago last Wednesday. I have since miscarried, it was my first pregnancy and we had been trying for 8 years. I am really angry that I didn't do more research before agreeing to go off. I will continue to take it through my first trimester at minimum once I talk to my dr.

I have been taking 500mg of XR throughout this pg. I have just been diagnosed with GD, but my blood sugars were not very high at all. My OB is pretty positive that I can control it with the met and diet.

Met has been a very positive thing for me. I plan to use it during my next pg.

Went of met after first trimester with DS. Due to morning sickness I had to stop at 9 weeks with this pregnancy. Everything went ok with DS- Broke even in the weight dept when I gave birth, no GD, nothing bad (except my dr complained labor went too fast). So far I'm doing alright with this pregnancy too.

Part of the reason my dr wanted me off the met is that they are unsure if met messes up the baby's own way of dealing with insulin- especially in the last trimester. I'd rather take the hit of GD and weight gain if it means baby won't be as messed up as me and could potentially miss having the IR that runs in the family.

My RE was *thinking* of taking me off at 12 weeks, but my OB wants me to stay on. I also met with a maternal/fetal medicine specialist who strongly advocated my staying on the met for the duration of the pg in order to avoid GD. I'm also having twins though, so I don't know if that influenced their decisions in any way.

Now if I could only remember to take it at the same time every day!!!

I have been told it is fine either way...and remember all the major systems are formed early on- so if there were concerns in that regard, no one would want you to stay on it for the first trimester! I think you ok either way you choose...and I know met after birth is still up in the air too...some people say met can improve milk production!

Hi I am new to all this. I have just started for my first cycle of clomid, I am also on metformin 850mgs twice a day. My FS has told me that when i get pg i am to stay on the metromin all the way through. He said that it reduces the chance of miscarriage and gestational diabeties. He said that he has always done this with his pcos ladies and has never had any problems. Hope this helps!
