I just had my third miscarriage in May. My doctor had lowered my met from 1500 to 500 and my first ultrasound was great went back 3 weeks later just a empty sac no baby at all. So my RE said that if I wanted to he would not make me get off of it next time I could take the whole pregnancy if I wanted. I have been alittle worried about it doing something to the baby. I was just wondering what everyone else thought and experiences people that stayed on it had, and if the baby was fine.
Thanks
Shanna
My doctor actually recommends women stay on met when they concieve in order to reduce their chances of m/c. He says a lot of women m/c because they abruptly stop met and it shocks their system. Many women have taken met through their pregnancies and have healthy babies. I definitely would consider it in your situation...just my 2cents.

I stayed on met for my 3rd baby until the 12th week, then I quit on my own, I couldnt take the effects. She promptly put me on Glyburide.
Now my situation is different, I do have tII diabetes, so I take Metformin as a matter of course, but I have noticed I havent had a miscarriage since I started on it. thats been 2 full term pregnancies.
Maybe you can talk about some alternatives, and check your bloodsugar, see if its behaving. Most PCOS ers take met for granted, but it still effects the blood sugar primarily, and if thats the probalem, maybe glyburide might be better, or even insulin.

5m/c (blighted ovum, unknown 6wk loss, fluke chromosomal @11.5 wks, chemical, missed mc 9 wks) me 39 dh 34
My sugar is always fine when I check it. I have also had the glucose test which was fine. Mine is my insulin always being elevated. I think Iam going to stay on the met, my doctor said if I stay on it through the first trimester I might as well just stay on it. He dropped it at 6 weeks last time after hearing the heartbeat and everything 3 weeks later the baby was gone disappeared nothing there at all but a sac. I have heard lots of good stories about people finally having successful pregnancies after staying on it. I dont know for sure if thats what caused it but it seems weird all was fine until I did drop it. I never makes me sick so maybe I will be able to stick with it.
Hi there, Sorry for your loss. I stayed on met for my whole pregnancy. I stopped taking it when I got home. So many doctors have different opinions on it makes it harder.

waiting on hubby's urologist appointment in Aug. Then onto a RE.
Ok I have been seriously looking for some PCOS gals that have gone throught the same thing. I was diagnosed November 2007 with PCOS, I always knew that there was something wrong. I always had weird period, irregular, short and painful. So my doc in all his wisdom told me to go on BC, I did and every mensus it was the most extreme pain ever. So fine years go by, I fall in love with the man I soon after marry. We decide right away to have children, and it's fun, but weird because for about a year(the time we started TTC) not one slight chance that I might be pregnant. So I went to another doc, and he referred me to a GYNO, I went he tested me and said yes...PCOS. I was like oh okay, well what do I do? He said well here is some provera, and Clomid and basically good luck. So I took my provera and my 50mg of clomid, nothing at all I hardly noticed anything. So I went back and he gave me 500mg per day of metformin, I researched and suggested it. Then the second round of clomid he upped it to 100mg. I got pregnant right away. So I went to my family doc not my GYNO, got a preg test, and blood the whole deal, everything was positive and everything was looking good. At this point I was 8 weeks. So I had to come in the following week for a whole prenatal work-up, and he suggested stopping the metformin. So I being a lucky mom, did exactly what the doctor had said. I was taking my folic acid, and prenatals. Taking very good care of myself despite the vicious morning suckness. Then all of a sudden at 11 weeks and 3 days, I started to bleed. Terrified I went to the hospital and got an ultrasound and it was a missed miscarriage. Patrick and I were so devestated, that I got severely depressed and my husband took a week off work. Anyways, I think that the baby had only died because of my insulin being all messed up. I got pregnant with the metformin, obviously because I needed it, and then the baby died because it wasn't there and I still needed it. So my GYNO said this time that I can take it throughout the entire pregnancy, and I plan to. At least I know for next time that I need the metformin, I just wish that I didn't listen to my family doc and only to my GYNO. Sorry about the confussion with the two doc, to be honest that was probably to blame for the miscarriage in the beginning. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that, without metformin I don't think I would be able to get pregnant, and from my past experience stay pregnant. Just my little say from the peanut gallery.
My obgyn also told me to go off the Met., so I reluctantly did, and then miscarried under 2 weeks later. I recently went to a endocrinologist and talked to him about staying on Met. during pregnancy and he said it is 100% fine to take during the ENTIRE pregnancy. Like someone said above, we were all able to conceive while on Met (so obviously we needed it) so why abrubtly stop? NEXT TIME, I am staying on Met!!!
LADIES--do not stop taking met during your pregnancy! If your gyno/family doc tells you to stop it go to a RE right away and get the script from them. Don't rely on your gyno/family doc for this info as it is not their specialty. Remember to take during your entire pregnacy to severly decrease the risk of m/c.

I was on met when i got pg for my son. My OB at the time told me to stay on it at my reg. dosage until i was past the 13wk mark...then to decrease it each week (or he said i could start decreasing it before 13 wks so that by the time i was 13wks i was done)....I hear so many different things i ahve no idea what is best. I have a small but happy/healthy son who just turned 1....i don't see any 'problems' wiht him from me taking metformin while pg....GL
Thanks for the info. I went to my gyno for another round of clomid, because I'm out of the 3 month miscarriage wait time, and he said I could stay on met. He did say that the fetus could have died from something called a Luteal Phase Defect????, and there was no possible way that I miscarried from stopping met. I mean WTF is that? I still firmly believe that it was me going on the met was what got me pregnant in the first place. I don't know why I believe it i just do, and sometime I think a woman knows her body more than some doc. All I know was that I stopped taking the met at 8 weeks and the fetus died at 9 weeks and 4 days, and I didn't start bleeding until 11 weeks and 3days notice less than 2 weeks. Oh well I'm hoping this coming pregnancy will be great and without the fear of another miscarriage.
I took 1500 to get pg the first time, lowered to 1000 wks 8-15, then stayed on 500 the entire pregnancy. My son is very healthy, very smart and at the top of the growth charts. 2nd pg no met lost @5 wks, 3 pg.... doing same course as first, gyno would not renew my script at 14 wks so I had to stop. My daughters heart stopped beating 3 weeks later. My CNM says she'll give it to me for as long as I want next time. I seriously think that is what went wrong. Both of us have been tested for everything under the sun and nothing was found. The specialist that did her autopsy said that it was certainly possible as a cause, although he couldn't tell. Hope that helps.
Good luck!-Kristina

My endo took me off the met immediately when I found out I was pregnant. I was hesitant to stop taking it b/c I was afraid of miscarriage. I reluctantly stopped taking the met and thankfully I have had a successful pregnancy so far! (28 weeks) I'm sure it is different for every woman..good luck to you!
I had 2 miscarriages wihtout taking any MET and then 1 at 14 weeks when I stopped the MET at 10 weeks, during my only full term pregnancy I took met until 28 weeks and my daughter is perfect and my pregnancy had no MET related complications.
Can anyone on here tell me if they have luteal phase defect??? Also can you tell me how you found out?...I'm curious about it my doc is blaming my m/c on it. I think it was stopping the metformin but...who knows..lol. Thanks Elisse~
