Default Metformin & Elevated Liver Enzymes

Hello. I was wondering....has anyone ever taken Metformin with slightly elevated liver enzymes? Mine are very slightly elevated and was determined by a specialist to be caused by fatty liver from being overweight. I'm worried about starting Metformin with this elevation. He said starting should be ok if we keep track of my enzymes very frequently. Just wondering if anyone had this situation and if so, have they lived to tell about it?! Did taking Metformin and losing weight from Metformin cause any liver decreases??? Thanks for any input!

My liver enzimes are high as well. Quite high actually. My Dr said that she will check them frequiently and I should be fine as long as I am losing weight. They may improve. I was checked for all Hepatitus's and than an ultrasound and they said it was consitant with fatty liver. I think that many of us sisters have the same thing.

Ok, thanks so much. I was checked for Hepatitus, etc. and had the ultrasound as well and like you, they said the same...fatty liver - but low levels. Well, that makes me feel better, knowing it is done. Thanks again - I wish you the best!

I had to stop Metformin after finding out I had elevated liver enzymes. But I went to my PCP to follow up. I was tested for hepatitus, among other things, all came back negative. I had a u/z of my liver, that was inconclusive. Then I had a CT scan that finally confirmed Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Syndrome.

My doctor felt that it was safe to go back on the Metformin as long as I come in monthly to check my liver enzymes. The main worry is of it turning into Lactic Acidosis. But my PCP felt that as long as we keep an eye on everything that it would be fine. If my levels rise too much, or any other red flags appear, I'd have to stop the Metformin. But for now, I'm good to go. He also wants me to work on losing weight, to help reverse the fatty liver and bring the enzymes down.

Best wishes

NJGirl,

Since your liver enzymes are just slightly elevated, you may want to think about getting another lab test to be sure. Initially, my doctor was relunctant to put me on Met because of my elevated liver enzymes. However, she did another lab on me about two weeks after the first lab and now my liver enzyme levels are normal. I guess it's possible to get a false reading on lab work.

Now because my liver levels are showing up as normal, my doctor has started me on Met and I'm doing very well on it so far.

Anyway, if your doctor is not too concerned about you taking Met with the elevated levels, you should be able to take the Met without much adverse effects. Best of luck to you...please keep us posted on your progress!

Thank you all for your responses. I tend to worry about things way too much - even if the doc ok'd me to start. Today will be day 2 at 500 mg. Praying that I don't have any problems/stomach issues.

My maternal grandmother had liver disease(non-alcoholic) and eventually had to have a liver transplant. I have heard that Metformin is bad for your liver and this really scares me because I know that I already have increased chances of having liver problems through my genes. So now I see that women with PCOS have an increased chance of having liver diseaasae, but does Metformin make that better or worse?

I have had the exactly same symptoms as you. I had a liver biopsy, ultrasound, my gallbladder removed and it still hurts. I have PCOS and take 750 Met twice a day and 100mg synthroid. I'm still fat around my waist! I have to watch eating anything greasy for sure. I never knew the Met could cause elevated liver enzymes. They said that I had fatty liver too! I'm so glad to read that other women have the same problems and I'm not the only one. I worry about my liver all of the time. I initially gained a lot of weight from stress and now I cannot get it off! I will pray for every one of you. Also, my back has been hurting right above my liver and I'm worried if that is why. I always look at my eyes and skin to make sure I'm not yellow!
