Default Metformin ER, & Recto Vaginal Fistula

Hello everyone. I am debating wether or not I should try metformin again. See my problem is that I have a recto vaginal fistula . When I take Met it really messes up my tummy, and I get the "runs".

Under a normal circumstance I could deal with that. However for me because of the fistula that I have it means that it comes out of both my anal, and vaginal openings. To plainly put it that is pretty damn gross. I loathe getting runny stool anytime, muchless constantly because of met.

My main question is does Metformin Extended Release still cause tummy trouble? All I have tried was regular Met, and I am hoping Metformin ER would be better for my tummy.

You definetly have a different situation that needs to be considered. I applaud you for being so open and seeking what's best for you.

I can tell you that met side effects are often a lot better if you eat cleanly (to keep your sugars controlled) and if you dose up really slowly. I would discuss the option with your Dr of dosing up ~ 250 mg at a time. Then as you tolerate each dose move up a little. Also, if you use a way of eating that keeps your sugars controlled, you give yourself a HUGE chance of eliminating problems (no pun intended...LOL). My side effects had been bad for a year...then i switched to the IR diet and rarely had a problem since. Eating in a way that doesn't counter act the drug (stable insulin) is a huge factor and I will never under estimate diet in my life again.

Good luck!

Gradual with this Medication is the way to go. I started on 250 mg. and was fine, but when I tried to go to 375 mg. too fast it caused tummy problems. I went back to the 250 mg. for another week and now I can tolerate it at 375 mg. no problem. I'll be trying the full 500 mgs. this week. So slow goes it.

I switched from regular Met to XR formula and for me I'm having way less tummy and bathroom problems. I'm fairly controlled with my sugars (unless my period is due) and even with controlling them my tummy didn't like the regular met. With the XR occaisionally I will get side effects, but its much less "urgent" and definitely now on the rare side, rather than the regular side of things.
