Default Metformin Extended Release v. Regular Metformin

Hi,

I recently switched from 1500mg of regular metformin to 1500mg metformin extended release. My side effects have been so much better on the extended release. A co-worker of my regular RE recommended that I switch to the extended release because I was still having big troubles adjusting.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is much difference between the two types of metformin on insulin resistance and helping to decrease the risk of miscarriage. It just makes me wonder if the extended release doesn't work as well since the regular metformin was first prescribed.

Thanks!

I am on XR. I don't think that there is a difference in the way the meds worked. The max dosage amount you can take is different on XR than on regular from what I've heard (it might be different now, who knows) I think the max is less on the XR.

I was on regular and then switched with no issues.

I was on Metformin XR during the first trimester of my pregnancy and also prior. I took 1000 mg xr. I found that I had a better time adjusting. My sister is on the non-XR formula and gets the runs after every meal. Poor thing. . I am on BCPs now, so no Met required. It took me 10 years to get pregnant. Hubby and I both have fertility issues so we ended up having an IUI. At least we will know how to get baby #2 here. God Bless and hope everything works out for you.

I was on Met XR prior to and during the first trimester of my pregnancy. I did find that I had less symptoms. My younger sis in on reg. Met and has to go to the bathroom after every meal. Poor thing! I keep trying to convince her to try the XR verison. Keep positive thoughts and pray alot. It took my hubby and I 10 years to get pregnant. We ended up having an IUI due to both of us having fertility issues. At least I know now what we need to do. Met XR plus 150 mg of Clomid!
