I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not if we will have to take Metformin forever since we have PCOS or if eventually we can get off of it? I feel like I don't want to be taking pills forever for PCOS. What do you guys think?

I was wondering the same thing! If you are able to restore ovulation, lose weight and become more insulin sensitve, can you ease off and see if your body can handle it?

Hi, I am on metformin primarily for insulin resistance but I have a dx of pcos as well. My endo that I went and saw said I would be on metformin as long as it took for me to get all the weight off I needed to get off and at the rate I am going it will be a very long time. It is working and I can tell when I dont take it, I have lost 25 pounds with changing eating habits and exercising and my menses have stayed regular. But I have had another bout of diverticulitis while on it so I am taking a break from it .
For Life!!! That sucks
The rate at which I am going.. metformin goes with me to my grave.

Id be afraid to get off it and gain back all the weight I've lost. That would be terrible!!! Ewww!!! The thought of gaining weight makes me physically ill!

Oh wow, for life. This is something I never considered asking my doctor. I just figured that once I was not 'obese', my insulin resistance would get in check.
Thank you ladies for your input. If anyone else knows please respond.

When I talked to my dr. she made the suggestion that I stay on it for a long time. She didn't give me a set date, but from the impression I got, I was going to be on it forever. Now that I am back on it, I will NEVER take myself off again. I lost 20 lbs. and once I thought I didn't need it, I gained back the 20 I lost and 10 more!! So I will never come off of it.

I was hoping that once I loose weight and change my lifestyle.. exercise regularly.. I wouldn't need it anymore.. but looking at your experiences of gaining back the weight.. I am scared.
Isn't there anyone out there who doesn't need it anymore?

When I was diagnosed my gyn said I would be on met for a v long time - if I came off them, the symptoms would come back. i came off the met for 2 months earlier this year, and they came back with reinforcements. Great...
