Unhappy Metformin and Getting Pregnant

Hi all,

Ugh, I'm am getting super depressed right now. I am surrounded by nothing but pregnant women...I know it just seems like it but it's really starting to take a toll on my emotional well being. I can't stop thinking about having a baby because it's all I want and it seems like it just won't happen....I'm happy for everyone I know that is pregnant and having a baby or already has kids but sometimes it's just so hard to deal with knowing that I may never have one.

I guess what I was going to ask was the doctor put me on a MAX of 1500mgs of Met... I don't know if I'm ovulating on my own or even if I would get af on my own because I'm taking BCP which will make no ovulation and make it hard to know if Met is working to get me af on my own. I have been on it for about a month. I go back to the doctor Nov 21 to see how much weight I will lose and also if I can go off BCP to see if Met is all I need to regulate my cycle.

I just need hope that some of you out there have gotten pregnant and carried to term on losing weight and exercise and taking Met...I can't afford IVF or adoption...and fertility treatments are sooooo expensive...If this doesn't work I'm afraid I'll never have a child.

If your answer is yes to the question above please let me know in detail what you did because I'm willing to try anything!!!

Hoping for our miracle!

~megan

P.S. BABY DUST TO ALL!

PCOS increases your chance of m/c while met has been shown to decrease that chance. over the past 8 years i have had 6 m/c (all early except for 1). the one time that my blood pregnancy hormones seemed to going up right was when i was on met. unfortunately, it was a tubal pregnancy.

I'm still early (10 weeks even), but I got pregnant on Met alone. Last year this time I didn't have AF, so I'm grateful! I stopped my BCP's in February of 07...

I started seeing my PCOS doc (an OB/GYN) in December, and started taking Met around the 15th or so. AF began on February 1st - had a few 31 day cycles, then they regulated to 28 days. I got my BFP on July 28th after AF was late, as she'd become clockwork on the last Saturday of each month...so when I didn't get her on the 26th I was ticked that my hormones were back messed up, LOL! But tested and got a BFP!

The Met didn't cause me to lose any weight, I'm still about the same weight I was when I first started seeing my doc (I'm not IR though). What it did do was regulate my hormones, which is why my doc put me on it.

That's all I've got...hope this helps!

lj2blessed,

Thanks so much for your kind words, you have given me hope that someday I will be able to have a baby, and I will be a success story. I have just had so many "cry myself to sleep" nights. I'm always happy to see cysters pregnant don't get me wrong...but I can't stand some of the women I'm around (without this problem) that get pregnant so easy and then they complain that they are...when there are so many of us trying so hard to become pregnant and just can't do it! Ugh...I'm hanging in there...hopefully sometime soon on Met I'll get my two pink lines!!!

Thanks again for the kind and hopeful words....

P.S. BABY DUST TO ALL!
hi Megan,

hang in there, i know exactly how you feel, was diagnosed with pcos about three years ago, we were trying for a baby and after coming off the pill didnt get any periods. after a year i had a positive test only to miscarry at 7 weeks.

after trying again for a year, and still not having any periods i bombarded the dr to refer me to specialist, it toke a year to get him to agree to putting me on metformin, at the last appointment i was so depressed as all of my friends and work colleagues seemed to be pregnant and it's the only thing i wanted but couldn't seem to have, after breaking down in his office he agreed to tryng metformin and i started with 750mg and you'll never guess what i was pregnant within six weeks and have just given birth to a beautiful baby girl called Amber Lei which means precious gift from god.

so fingers crossed and don't give up, you'll get the baby in the end

xxxx

I'm trying with Metformin alone...i took Provera to induce a period, and i got mine about 4 days after finishing the provera, and i had an update doc appointment and she uped my met doseage to 1500mg's a day and told me to try with the met until our next appointment in December and if nothing by then to talk about clomid. Does this sound like an okay plan to you guys? i would love to conceive within the first few months of trying. I've been having cramps and what not and i'm CD17. And have had nothing but negative opk's. Maybe its coming soon!

Hey, that plan sounds great! Don't give up...I'm a ttc break for awhile to get my health together...I'm on 1500mg of met a day with diet and exercise and go back to doc in Nov to see how much weight I've lost and also to see if I need to bump it up to 2000 mg a day...but I'm going off BCP in Nov or Dec and then from there hopefully I get pregnant...I can't wait to list my BFP...hope you get yours soon to!

I wish you the best of luck, my husband and i cant afford ivf either but i don't think i could handle that and were adopting our home study will be sent out this coming week and we can start looking for a baby. I would have adopted several years ago but because i was misinformed that it was expensive like $20000 but the beginning of this year I was so frusterated about still not getting pregnant I deceided to just call some places and see and i found we could afford it our total cost is about $1700 and we were able to pay in payments so that helped out a lot. but if your worried about it maybe just give a few places a call and get some info if you cant now you will at least feel good about the information you get...

I have only been on met for a month and want to take my time and loose weight and then maybe a year or 2 after the adoption we will try to have a baby but I just couldnt wait any more I just wanted a baby...

I truly wish you the best no matter what and if you ever need anything feel free to PM me.

I lost weight but not becasue of met alone, I had to "diet"...I did weight watchers. I got with in 3 pounds of a doctor recommended healthy weight. Went off BCP and the first month we tried we were pregnant. I now have a almost 5 month old baby boy.

Good luck to you all!

I have recently discovered that I'm pregnant after Metformin regulated my cycle (and after having a cyst removed from the entrance to my womb in June). The Met took a while to regulate me as I wasn't taking it regularly at first due to a 6 month trip to stay with family and have a holiday in NZ where I didn't eat regularly (wouldn't take Met without food!!!) then the cyst was in the way but now I've got pregnant on my second cycle after the op!! The last cycle was slightly longer than the usual Met regulated (like clockwork 26 days each month) so it makes me wonder now...!

I'll also put this elsewhere as I need an answer - what have other people done about the Met when they got pregnant? I've seen articles on the Web that staying on Met for first 3 months drastically reduces the chance of early miscarriage but my doctor knows very little about Met (wouldn't prescribe it until a fertility expert reccommended it for me) and I Know she'll take me off them straight away. I'm inclined to not tell my doctor until I get my next repeat prescription of Met in 3-4 weeks and she can't stop me taking them. Suggestions/experiences anyone Someone Please!!!

Hang in there. I TTC naturally for almost 5 years before I finally pulled it together and went to a Dr. He ran a few tests and put me on Metformin. A month into it, he gave me Clomid, but I couldn't start that until my next menstrual cycle started. So I waited, and waited for it, but it never came... because I'm pregnant! I was only on Metformin for 2 months.

Once I became pregnant, my Dr told me to stay on it until my 12th week. Staying on Metformin through the first trimester is found to reduce the risk of miscarriage in women like us (or at least in women like me.) I've been told that some women stay on it through the whole pregnancy, because it can also reduce the chances of getting gestational diabetes later in the pregnancy. Perhaps that's for those of us that are already diabetic... I'm not sure. But my Dr told me to quit at 12 weeks.

Hope that helps... hang in there!
