A pharmacist friend of mine sent me the following emails when I asked this question awhile back.
Hello_______,
I have made several inquiries regarding Metformin XR but have not yet received a clear answer why it is not available here.
If you are using this for polycystic ovarian syndrome, all references I have come across is for the use of the NON-extended release form 500-850mg three times daily or 1000mg twice daily.
You may want to check out www.canadapharmacy.com
They sell it online. This is likely where the confusion about it's Canadian availability comes from. This drug is probably dispensed from the States - their site says it is "dispensed from a jurisdiction where this drug is approved for sale". It is not approved for sale in Canada.
This is the response I got from the online pharmacy:
This is FYI - for legal reasons I can not endorse this method of obtaining Glucophage XR as it is not legal in Canada.

so technically you can obtain it but it's an online source.
There was rumor here awhile back that it was going to be approved in Canada but I haven't heard any follow up to it.
Thank you both for the response. I am diabetic type II and was just wondering . I am from the states working on my Immigration to Quebec . When I went down home our family dr gave me a script for gulcophage xr and i had used that for a month and then got it refilled with regular.

I just started Met XR this week. My dr seemed surprised I asked about it but i couldn't take the side effects from the regular met anymore. No side effects yet but I'm not up to the full dosage yet. She gave me enough samples for a month but didn't think my drug plan would cover it. I checked with my pharmacist and she says that it is covered but I didn't get the actual price.
