I'm just curious. Is there anyone out there that has noticed themselves losing more hair after being put on Metformin? The reason I ask is b/c I have been on it for about 6 months and the Dr. has incresed it from 500 mg a day to 1500 mg a day. It seems the more I take the more I lose. Has anyone else noticed this trend or am I just reading too much into it?

I've experienced more hair loss since taking metformin. I can't tell whether the metformin is causing faster hairloss, or whether my hair loss just would have gotten worse at this time regardless. (My acne had gotten much worse before I started the metformin, which suggests my hormones were getting more out of whack anyway, and it hasn't improved any.)
Does your doctor test your vitamin B12 level? Metformin can cause B12 deficiency, which can contribute to hair loss.
Honestly at this point I'm not entirely sure what all is being tested. I know we have tested all hormones, thyroid, and a few other things. I've just had so many appts. and so many trips to visit the vampire nurses only to turn around and have my meds upped again. It bothers me. I'm normally not this vain but I don't want to lose my hair. Just the other day I found my first gray hair and was so excited about it. I earned that hair! But, now the thought of it falling out too bothers me. I think I'm going to give this new dose of Met a chance and see what it does and if I still notice the same problems and my hair falling out more and I plan to just stop and have a little talk w/ the dr. I can't take this on top of everything else.

I don't have the hairloss, I tend to notice that my facial hair grows more when on the metformin. I am so tired of this.
You know that is also something I'm curious about. My facial hair is growing faster. What is up w/ that too? I wish it was the other way around! I wish the hair on my head would grow faster and the hair on my face was falling out. Wouldn't that be nice? I can dream huh?

My hair shed badly on metformin and didn't stop even after I quit the met. This was after it had finally stopped shedding on spiro. Met ruined it all *sigh* Continued to shed until finding DCI. Met made my DHEA shoot up through the roof and my symptoms actually got worse, plus I didn't O. Many cysters love it but it was not the wonder drug for me. There's many more to try though--Actos, AVandia, byetta, Orlistat (sp?), plus herbs: DCI, chromium, NAC, etc

That's just what is bothering me. I didn't have really bad symptoms, in fact I didn't really have any, until I started taking Met. Now, it's all gone to hell. I don't know what else to try. I'm just fed up w/ it all.

Metformin depletes the body of the B vitamin.
My doc told me to start taking a B-complex vitamin. And when I did my hair stopped falling out so bad. It was getting to where I could see my scalp. Then I started the B vitamins and my hair started growing back.

Thank you...Thank you...Thank you...I thought that this was just a coincidence.
I have always had thin hair, but since starting Met, it was getting crazy. I am afraid to wash my hair!!!!
I am going to try the B vitamin right away!! Anything is worth a try...
Thank you again ladies for bringing this up!

Thanks for that info. I think I will call my dr. in the morning and ask her about it. And, hopefully start taking a B vitamin. B/c I'm losing so much hair everyday!

Your welcome.
It is really frustrating to be taking something like Metformin that helps our PCOS symptoms, but can make other symptoms such as hair loss worse....Well good luck ladies!!

Are you taking the B vitamins and the Met together? Did happen to help w/ any of the other unpleasant side affects that we tend to get not only from Met but also from PCOS?

Yea I take the vitamins the same time.
Well the B-vitamins doesn't help with the Met side effects, those go away by themselves through time. Unfortunatly.
I believe Met helped clear my skin and slow the growth of facial hair. But it took awhile for that. I didn't see results over night. The main thing is it regulated my periods and hormones and made me ovulate. Metformin is the reason I got pregnant after trying for 9-10 years..
But each of us is different. Some say it didn't help clear up thier skin at all. But I definitly noticed a change. I took it way over a year, and noticed a skin change like 3-6 months after taking it. I was only on it 1 month before I got my first period.

Unfortunately, the B vitamin didn't help me. I still had the awful side effects. But like I said, the met also made my DHEA skyrocket (from like 100 to over 400, abnormal)--maybe get your doc to run testosterone, DHEA, and all that again since you have been on met a while. Can't hurt just to know.
Any drug won't show results overnight, but I was on for 8 months w/ horrible results. I'm just saying, there's other drugs & options out there. My doc gave up and pushed IVF when Met didn't work--lousy doc.
