You could ask about Metformin ER/XR (extended release). It may or may not help with the side effects, but at least you could manage it so the side effects only occurred at home.
Have you tried keeping a food diary to see what triggers the side effects? It really worked for me, however my diet ended up being too restrictive so I came off Met. (Definately not recommending that to you though, that was my own personal decision)
