Default Metformin and Insulin Resistant Diet

Hello everyone:

Just a quick question for anyone who can help me. Im just starting metformin and was wondering if the Insulin Resistant Diet was ok to do while taking metformin? I would like to start that diet but not sure if it's safe or not?

Thank You Carlene

I am on metformin and also am following the IR diet. Took me about 16 months to lose 45 pounds. For me i need to follow the IR diet and take my metformin to feel good.

My doctor told me to try the GI diet... I didn't want to lose weight, but he told me that avoiding glucose peaks was a good idea. After 7 months of trying to behave, drinking a lot less, eating wholemeal foods and cutting out sweets and softdrink, i've lost around 5 kilos and my symptoms have all but gone. I never thought I could actually live a normal life, but a combo of the met and a healthy diet really do seem to do wonders. I've since cut out alchohol entirely due to an unpleasent reaction a couple of glasses of wine had on me and my medication. I was so sick i decided to go teetotal. So far i've done very well. I found that drinking spirits with sugarfree mixers never made me feel ill (or drunk for that matter.. but eh) but wine and beer... Eugh.

The only problem with being on a restricted diet is going to parties and indeed christmas. My mother did very well this year, making me a special desert of fruit and sugarfree chocolate with low sugar yogurt. But it is hard.

Being on a low sugar diet and watching your fat intake is good for anyone. If anything it helps with the symptoms as your body isn't having to contend with nearly so much Glucose. The only problem with low sugar diets is that you crave fatty food to make up for it. I know that I have a tendency to eat chips because I can't have a candy bar... which I really shouldn't do. Be strict on yourself, but dont deprive yourself a little pleasure. I've found there are several places that make diabetic sweets and chocolate so you can indulge your sweet tooth. a batch of wholemeal pancakes with sweetner in the batter are my snack of choice at the moment. Healthy and sugar free, and they really get rid of that urge to snack on sweet sugary foods.

IR is a perfect plan for met, because it does not low carb, but it does limit the kind and portions. So you don't get the hypoglycemia like women who are low carbing.

I was on met for over a year and had very limited success. When I started the IR diet in conjuction, it was like Met was a new drug for me. My diet no longer counter-acted the drug and my hormones and periods were normal within 6 months or so. I lost weight faster (not quickly but probably 2-3 pounds a month which was WAY faster than before) and I felt better because my sugars were stable.

I still use the IR plan now..I've been maintaining my goal weight for over 2 years now.

I HIGHLY reccommend it and wish you well!
