Default Metformin and lactic acidosis

I had been told I have PCOS three years ago. I was put on Metformin but then began to read the side effects. Has anyone ever experienced lactic acidosis and how common is it? I do like to go out and have an occasional drink, is his okay? Anyone with any info on this would help. Thanks!

talk to your Dr. I have the occasional glass (Very rarely) and am fine. However my Dr. monitors my blood levels quiet frequently.

Default Lactic acidosis

Has anyone experience lactic acidosis? I am terrified to take metformin because of this. (I know how silly that sounds) Also I am getting really bad acne (which sucks) and I want to know if metformin helps. Dr.'s have not been much help so far.

I believe lactic acidosis is fairly rare. I have taken metformin for years (1500 mg XR) and do occasionally have a drink or two (obviously not while PG) and have never had any problems whatsoever. My bro is diabetic and uses metformin and also hasn't had any problems.

I was taking metformin and had an episode of binge drinking the first week in december (I really never drink). My blood work a week later showed that my anion gap was elevated (which indicates lactic acidosis). I immediately stopped taking metformin. My doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it and told me not to go for follow up blood work until january. I am concerned though realizing that it is a life threatening condition. Just be careful if you decide to have a few drinks. Sometimes a few can turn into a dozen!

My doctor told me that metformin should be cleared from the body within a day or so. I usually take my met a night so if I plan to drink I just skip one day. I've never had a problem but I'm not a doctor either so just an FYI

Default Acne

Thanks for all of your input! Another question....does anyone have a good way to get rid of acne. I used to be on birth control which got rid of it, but now I can't be on it any longer. I started taking met about 1 month ago, but still haven't had a period in 5 months. I moved to a new area about a year ago and still haven't found a Dr that answers these questions. Any input would help.

I was put on spironolactone to reduce the testosterone and treat acne. THe dermatoligist I saw said he typically uses spironolactone. I'm not sure why your off BC but if you are TTC you have to stop taking the spiro as soon as you know you are pregnant. It has been know you cause the ambigious development of the genitals in later stages of pregnancy. FYI!

Hey! I am also new to the site and new to pcos treatments....once my doctor told me about it I realized I'd been having symptoms for almost 4 years....I also have a new rx for metformin, and am scared to start it because I have "shakey" spells between meals and am concerned about how this might affect it, although some of the posts I've read here so far say that it actually helped with that....does anyone have experience with this??

I also got shaky spells before taking Metformin. It has not made it worse so far, but I do get dizzy from time to time.
