Default Metformin and liver enzymes?

i was in the ER last night and was made aware that my liver enzymes are slightly elevated.. now i dont have liver disease or hepatitis so this frightened me.. because i dont know why they would be elevated.. so i did some research and found out metformin and cause this.. now im not positive that this is what it is from but this is 99% the reason why imho.. so what do i do?? and has anyone ever heard of this before?? i have only been on metformin since march i am on about 1500mg but i dont always take that dose. My AST is 39 (H) and my ALT is 82 (H) so yeah i am definitly alarmed.. what do you ladies think?

My doctor does routine blood work to check liver enzymes, because, unfortunately, this can be an effect of Metformin for some people.

Are you overweight? In case your BMI is above 30 that is the likely cause, not the Met. It is simply too much fat in the liver.

Weight can increase the numbers, but it's not exactly the cut-and-dry answer you posted. Abnormal test results re:weight are usually tied to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is not an automatic result of being overweight, although that's the major risk factor. Many of us on here are overweight/obese, and our numbers are perfectly normal (including mine).

Your docs will figure it out!

It might also be related to the PCOS...not the metformin...

I went to the doctor the other day and he found that my liver was inflamed. The ultrasound confirmed it as well as my spleen. My bloodwork came back with and my ggt is 232, ast is 304, alt is 622 and my ld is 311, all of which are way out of range. I don't have Hepatitis or Lymes or any other obvious reason for this other than PCOS/insulin resistance. He referred me to a Hepatologist. I was on Metformin for 6 months of my pregnancy last year but it doesn't seem related. I tried to take Spironolactone about a month agao but after five days I had bad cramping in my neck and back so I discontinued it. At the same time I started Metformin again but I felt sick and I believe that was because I was on a low carb diet at the time. I'm pretty sure that the Hepatologist will find that it's related to PCOS. The thing with liver disease is that symptoms are usually very mild until advanced stages. I had only mild tenderness in my upper right quadrant until he pressed hard on it....not pleasant. Since my pregnancy I've been extremely fatigued. Hopefully they can give me some guidance as to how to correct this. There's so much information out there and it all contradicts itself especially when it comes to diet recommendations. It would be great if there were more doctors that were well informed about PCOS and it's effects on the rest of our bodies....ugh. Just a little rant.

It could be a fatty liver, I also had the same problem last year. After getting my cholesterols levels dwn to normal the liver enzyme levels also came down.

I was pretty sure it would be a fatty liver until I got a copy of bloodwork done on 4/28 that listed my liver enzymes within normal range. My cholesterol has also dropped 24 points since april. I repeated bloodwork yesterday and see the Hepatologist today. I also found out that my thyroid was a bit underactive so my Endo repeated the TSH yesterday. I am curious to see what diagnosis I end up with.

My doctor does the same thing. He tested me about 3 months after I started Met and since they were normal, he allowed me to continue the Met use. I will now have to get my liver enzymes tested once a year for as long as I am on Met. This is a side effect of many medicines. He told me at an appointment on Thursday that cholesterol medicines can also cause an increase in liver enzymes and I had to get my liver enzymes checked while on Depakote (a med prescribed for bi-polar disorder).

lovingmama - I'm sorry to hear you're having to deal with the elevated liver enzymes.

My dr has never tested mine... all he checks is my kidney function. I need to ask about this it seems. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'm going to have to read all those links Kat posted too.
