Default Metformin & Losing Weight?

Hi,
I'm new here.My doctor thinks that I might have pcos so she prescribed me Metformin I'm on the lowest dose right now.
She said that hopefully it will make me get my periods & help me to lose weight.
I have some questions for everyone:

1. Has Metformin made u lose weight?
2. If so how???
3.Did the Metformin make u not want to eat or did u still eat alot & lost weight from it or did u lose weight from going to the bathroom alot taking it?

Please reply soon everyone

Hello, I too just started taking metformin and am wondering the same thing...so far though I am having side effects to the metformin (stomach issues) I have only been on it a few days though so I'm sticking it out.

i'm not sure if the metformin has made me lose weight or not. i changed my eating habits around the time that i started taking the metformin. i had been on it previously and had bad side effects from it. so i decided that i needed to chage the way that i ate. i have since lost close to 15 pounds. i do find that i don't have as much of an appetite with it. since i've changed the way that i eat, the side effects have been really minimal and i have had no issues... good luck!

1. Has Metformin made u lose weight? Yes, 51 lbs
2. If so how??? Keeps my appetite under control.
3.Did the Metformin make u not want to eat or did u still eat alot & lost weight from it or did u lose weight from going to the bathroom alot taking it? I am insulin resistant. The IR would take all the food I ate and store it as fat, not burning it as energy as in a non-IR person. The met has made my body work how it's supposed to work. Plus the decrease in appetite has helped too!

Good luck!

welcome to sc yes, metformin helped me loose weight. About 2 half stone (er....about 35 lb). But my endo said it was a coinsidence.

i find that as long as i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss and always eat with the met i am ok with it.

Can I ask how long you gals were on Met before you started seeing the weight disappear? I lost 4 lbs the first week and since then have gained them back and have not lost anymore. I take 1,000 mg a day. I was already eating pretty healthy and excercising, so I didn't have much of that to change. I'm starting to get discouraged because for two years I ate right, excercised daily and gained 50lbs. I was hoping Met was going to help out.

I started on Met Jul 4, 2008 and immediately started the Low GI diet. I lost 17 lbs the first month (so, I was just starting on 250mg, 500mg and then 750 mg - I took a long time to get to 1000mg). Unfortunately, as my side effects have gone away (not completely, but they are not bad AT ALL anymore), my eating discipline has too. So, I returned to *semi* my old eating habits. I continue to drop weight though...I guess cause I am not eating even NEAR the amount I was before.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!!

I have lost 20lbs in 10 weeks of taking them.

I am good with my food choices otherwise I will get a bad tummy with anything greasy etc etc.

I am on 1500mg a day and it took me 3 weeks to get to that dose.

When I first started Metforim, I was on a pretty low dose too, but with changing eating habits and just doing some yoga at home, I lost about 35 lbs in 4 or 5 months.
I didn't have any adverse side effects from the Metformin. However, I think it's supposed to be like a tool, it won't do all the work, it just helps your body work properly so it can do the work more effeciently.
My doctor is an osteopath, so he gives me a lot of natural and diet-based suggestions, and around the same time, he had me read: Ultrametabolism by Dr.Mark Hymen (terrible last name, I Know). It basically discusses the effects of the "American Diet" (all our yummy synthetic foods) on our bodies and our genes. There are a lot of changes in that book that I made to my diet that I think really helped with the weight.
It's a really informative book as far as what food can do to our bodies (other than the obvious )

I had some emotional setbacks and my eating got way out of whack again, and I have gained the weight back, and now I'm on a higher dose of Metformin than before. So at least for me, I think Metformin just opens the door, but you have to walk through it. If only it could be easier!

Good luck!

Ive been on Metformin since October 08 and to date I have lost a total of 16 pounds.I did not change anything about my diet but it did make me eat smaller portions and i did not exercise but i do alot of walking for my job so that could have been a way it came off also. But it just depends on you and your lifestyle.I will say i experienced every side affect that comes with taking Metformin also which means i used the bathroom a whole lot.MAKE SURE YOU EAT EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU TAKE IT.LOL.. I learned the hard way..

Although it never did regulate my period, met has done other wonders for me. I have lost about 15-20 pounds in 6 months. I havent changed my eating habits much, but I have worked out a little more, and it's nice to finally see results.
Side effects didnt stick with me for long either, it is just a part of every day life for me now

One of the side effects that bothers many who take it, is GI issues. Eating eases these issues.
