My dear SC I pose this question to you as I am totally baffled.
I have been undergoing testing for reasons unrelated to PCOS (well at least I think unrelated).
Anyways, I have been told that I can't be taking Metformin when I have my CT scan with iodine contrast dye. Also that I can't Metformin when I have surgery.
Any idea as to why that is??

It can cause an increased risk of lactic acidosis and is dangerous if your kidney function isn't normal.

If you are not eating regular meals, it is not advisable to take Met due to the risk of Lactic Acidosis (like the PP said). It is a common practice to stop Met for surgery since you have to go a long period of time without eating before surgery and usually don't want much to eat for a day or two after surgery.
I just had my medical history taken before I have surgery on Wednesday, and they told me to not take any Met Tuesday before surgery on Wednesday, and not take any Met on Wednesday. The nurse said that there's a really small chance that Met can interact adversely with anesthesia, so they just tell everyone to not to take it to avoid the risk.
RNtobe I see in your siggy that your on potassium. I was just wondering what your on it for and how much.

Hey Sheila, I am actually taking Potassium because my blood potassium is too low. I am currently being worked up at the Mayo clinic for a host of reason, but low potassium is one of them. No matter how many meds I take, I just can't seem to get my darn potassium to be in the normal range!
Kidney stones eh? How I hate the little boogers!
