Default Metformin=muscle tiredness??

Hi everyone... I am currently on day 10 of starting Met and I am now up to 1500 mg. As of yesterday, I started getting a little tiredness in my legs. They feel weak and like jello. I feel slightly dizzy/off balance as well.

Luckily, the GI upset has not really bothered me yet. Is the muscle stuff and dizziness common? Why does it happen?

Charity

Are you making sure that you are eating a good meal when you take your met? My re told me to make sure I eat a good meal with my met in order to keep from getting dizzy or weak. I have never had this problem, but was remembering what she told me about making sure I eat.

Muscle pain and fatigue are symptoms of the met.
Some people adjust after time and it will go away. If it gets worse or doesn't go away in a week or so, you may need to adjust your dose.

I became very sensitive to it and had to finally stop it.

Try adding Potasium and see if that helps(does for most people)

Hang in there

The dizziness can be from lower blood sugar than you're used to (not necessarily hypoglycemia, but lower than your own normal) and/or dehydration. It's important to drink a lot of water and eat every few hours while on Met.

In regards to the muscle tiredness, it's mentioned a lot here and is common. Here is an explanation of why this happens:

Recent research suggests that Metformin may stimulate glucose uptake by muscles and inhibit glucose production by the liver by activating an enzyme, AMP-activated protein kinase which is present in muscle, liver, and heart cells. This enzyme is usually activated when exercise has burnt off cellular energy stores. So in a way, Metformin seems to trick the body into thinking it has exercised. This may be why it causes a small amount of weight loss and also results in elevated levels of lactate--the substance that makes your muscles ache the day after an exercise session.
