Points: 1,026.40 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,026.40 | metformin and not hungry??? Hi ladies...
Here's my problem/question....
I have been taking Metformin(Glucophage)ER for over a year now...1500mg all at once at night....for the last few weeks, I decided to take it 500mg at a time, throughout the day....I changed based on what other girls around here are doing, and having success with...
Now here's my problem....I have no hunger....for breakfast today, I managed to eat two hardboiled eggs and I'm now currently trying to gag down a chef salad....I'm just not hungry...and in fact, kinda sick to my stomach.....I started eating low carb a couple weeks ago, and I'm virtually positive that that is not the problem, since it started before that.
So do we suppose that is all from the Metformin???I mean, I'm not complaining..just a bit concerned.
Any advice out there? |

For about the first 6-8 months on met I felt nauseated and had extreme food aversions. This is a fairly common side effect. However, you don't want to let it get so bad you can't eat anything. For me, carbs always made me feel better so I had to step back from the low-carbing. I try to eat good carbs and limit my intake, but I still have to have some. There are foods, still, that I cannot eat because I associate them with ickyness. Unfortunately, these are mostly low-carb foods.

I have the diorrheoa (sp?) from time to time and on the odd times a bit of nausea, mainly if I eat a high carb meal, but overall I don't have many side effects on met. I have noticed though that I can eat fairly regularly during the day, but come night time I'm eating 1/2 of what I used to eat. I just get full a lot quicker. Don't know if it's because I am now eating a bit healthier so my insulin levels don't spike and affect my sugar or what, but I definately am not eating as much. Not much weight loss despite being on met for 2months though.

For breakfast, I will feel hungry, but then feel full less than half way through the meal. I just assumed that this was due to the medicine. I'm not really eating any different, do you think it has anything to do with my body handling insulin better??? |

I can not eat very much (usually a small bowl of cereal or some crackers for breakfast, and a bowl of soup or some plain meat sandwich's for dinner) It drives my husband crazy, he will fix me dinner and i will only eat about 1/2 -2/3's of it. I have also found if i accedently miss a pill I loose almost All of my appitite for a week or more, i get bad nausua and horrible tummy aches (good way to keep me taking them everyday lol). So my advice is keep taking them on time and try your best not to miss pills, and your appitite should get better (but it probably will only be like 1/2 what it was before ) hope this is a lil reasuring

I'm not saying this is true for everone taking Met, but from what my doc told me, Met is pretty short acting and it works if you take it before each meal. It's how I've been able to lose weight. I take it prior to meals (i'm on 1500 mg, so one before each meal) and it really does keep me from overeating, eating anything rich in carbs and anything sugary.
I think that you'll see some good results (weight loss, help with low carbing, etc.) if you stop taking it all at once.
Good luck!

I get full very quickly taking this drug, which is an odd effect I think. I do believe that is why I have lost 40 lbs but also feel that it has utilized my insulin response. (I never over ate to begin with...). (I was so fearful of weight gain...) I am now a very healthy weight and have to watch that I don't lose any more. My main concern is being to thin due to the appetite loss and my endo taking me off the drug. My BMI is still in a healthy range at 22 so he said not to worry. I have been on the drug 4 years as of November 1st and will take it the rest of my life.

It is best to take with/or after meal. I wouldn't try to take it like an hour before you eat, because if I were to do that I would be so nauseated.

Points: 155.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 155.00 | I have been on met 1500 mg/day for 1 month. I take all 3 pills at night. I too have had a major decrease in appetite. I am eating so much less than I was, it is unbelievable! I am also eating mostly low carb. I have found many foods that I used to like that are comlpetely unappealing to me now. I have lost about 10 lbs since I began taking met and I think I may have actually O'd this month, so I am thrilled! I think the loss of appetite is a common side effect of met, so don't worry!
