Question Metformin + NuvaRing

Hey everyone

So, I am 22 and about to go to graduate school. I'm in a healthy 2 year relationship and but def. not wanting to get pregnant anytime soon. However, with PCOS, I still want to manage the symptoms before they get worse (heart disease, thyroid cancer and diabetes all run in my family). I am new to the whole idea of taking anything other than birth control (its the only thing doctors have suggested to me for the past 5 years...ugh!) and I'm thinking about asking my doctor about getting on Metformin. I am curious--can you be on both a birth control method AS WELL AS a medication like Metformin--or would the drugs be affected by each other somehow? I mean, I'd like to manage the weight gain, acne, blood sugar, hair growth etc but also not have a baby right about now (I was on Ortho-lo but now I'm on Nuva Ring). Is this ideal? I'm a newbie--thank you to everybody!

Melanie

Hi Melanie,
I was on metformin and was offered the option to go onto birth control, so I imagine Nuva Ring will work fine....obviously you'd want to confirm with your ob/gyn or your endocrinologist...but I have found that I was offered birth control by both doctors (even though I didn't want it) and they were aware of the metformin.
Welcome to the world of PCOS...

Peace. it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart. (unknonw)

I am on both Metformin and Actos and NuvaRing. I am however IR, i think the decision as to whether your doc will prescribe met might rely on if you are IR. I have read that Met is prescribed alot for IR and those that are TTC. But you can discuss with your doctor and see what they think.

When I was first diagnosed my dr gave me Metformin and the Nuva Ring. The bc should work fine as long as you're not on an anitbiotic. The phamacist told me once that the Nuva Ring isn't affected by antibiotics as much an an oral be, which kind of makes sense, but it is some. So the only additional meds to worry taking would be antibiotics. Otherwise, it would all be safe.

My dr gave me Metformin, Aldactone (for hair growth, bp control, and water retension), Adipex (weight control, can only take it for three months), and Synthyroid (my thyroid was a little low). Plus the Nuva Ring and I never had any trouble other than the occassional yeast infection. Which I found out the Nuva Ring can cause, makes sense location and purpose of device is bound to eventually cause an unbalance in the area. So my dr gave me a prescription for Diflucan (1/2 pill day before ring is removed) just as a way to prevent a yeast infection.

Hope that helps.

I am on Met and just went off NuvRing only because I could have handle the excess estrogen. This is common with any BC and me!
