Hi,

I have taken Mettaformin and it has done nothing for me.
I always questioned my RE why I am even taking it since my fasting insulin levels were normal.

I don't have acne but without Met I don't have periods at all. With met I have 30-35 day cycles and on the 30 day cycles I O on time (good egg). The 35+ day cycles are bad eggs (bad chromosome mix and leads to miscarriage). I found this out because I just got PG and miscarried. So met definitely helped me conceive within 5 months. They say normal couples conceive within 6 months. So with met I feel halfway normal, at least on THAT score!

I've been on met since xmas. I have lost 21 lbs, gotten two cycles, but my testosterone was way through the roof after starting the gluc. I just upped today per my endo to 1500mg. Any ideas on what gives? It may make me a bit more in the mood, but I certainly don't feel feminine.

Marieh,

I am taking 1,500 mg. I have all of the side effects and none of the benefits. I am constantly drinking fluids. I am always thirsty. I want sweets 10X more than before I started taking the drug. I also am sick all the time. I also stopped having bowel movements. I have to take a laxative so I am able to and I know thats not good for you. I know the drug is causing this because I took it twice and when I stopped taking it everything returned to normal. However, my RE says it will help my fertility. So I am miserable and I take them. It just doesn't make sense to me to give someone a drug that lowers insulin levels were theirs is normal. I have been taking the drug for 3 months now on my second try.

1 week at 500mg
3 weeks at 1000 mg
I have been 1,500 mg ever since. It wasn't unitl I got to this dosage did all of my problems start.
I am thinking of asking my RE to go to a lower dosage.

How long does it take for the side effects to go away?

Sorry to Rant.

hi,
just wanted to add that for me met has helped regulate my periods. I haven't taken it long enough to see the benefits of it for infertility etc. For DD- did your doctor explain to you how metformin works? It does not lower your blood sugar and so you don't have to worry about having "normal" blood sugar levels and taking met. Merformin works to keep insulin levels lower or in check and helps your body use the insulin that it excretes to work better. You could suffer from lactic acidosis which is rare while on met- but that's not likely unless you take your pills and skip a lot of meals in a row. Also- how are you taking your pills each day? Look for the sticky at the beginning of the MET section and see what others take to help the pills settle better in their systems. Like taking it in the middle of a meal or with milk at least and taking fiber with it to regulate your bm's. Good luck to you - we all struggle with met at times.

Yes, I have Weight Watchers at work. That has worked for me, and I got the results from the insulin from my endo, who said as long as it works, I can continue that. I watch what I eat and try to exercise 30-60 minutes a day (it ends up on the 30 minute side). The met has jumped started the weight loss.
