Default Metformin Post BFP!

I have no idea where I would ask this question. (Other than Metformin sucess stories which is locked). But I have just got back from seeing a Dr and he has confirmed my BFP. I have been on metformin for 4 months, ya hoo it worked. But the Dr I saw (walk in clinic) said I should stop metformin right away. But I recall reading somewhere that that might cause a miscarriage. I am to scared to stop it but my DH wants me to do exactly what the dr says? Any advice?

Thanks!

I think it depends on the doctor. There are 2 doctors at the RE office I go to. Mine says to stay on it through 12 weeks. The other doctor has women go off of it when they get thier BFP. I have heard that being on met can help reduce the risk of miscarriage. I'd say talk with your doctor and follow their advice.

Congratulations!!! Met was my wonder drug too. I got pg after 2 months on Met. I have chosen to stay on Met throughout my pg on the recommendation of my RE and with the blessing of my OB. I am doing this mostly to decrease the risk of GD. With that said I know most women stay on it through 12 weeks and wean off gradually to prevent wild hormonal shifts. I would ask again. It is a safe drug during pg.

Thanks Girls,
I am going to stay on it. I am terrified of a miscarriage. I will wait to see my specialist first. I dont want to trust a GP I just met.

Thanks for the congratulations. I have been on Met for 4 mths. And oddly enough I got AF way less on it. I think in that 4 mths I got it twice when before I was getting it monthly just not a regular cycle (though the longest I have gone without it in the past is 9 months). And the Fertility Specialist I am seeing did a ultra sound on August 25th and said the Met isn't working and its not going to happen without Clomid. He gave me a prescription but I didnt take it and viola I got a BFP. Even though I hadnt had a AF since his ultra sound. Riddle me that? So girls don't give up. I am so glad all I never took the Clomid. I would of missed my chance. I guess you got to go with your gut.

Danielac, I know metformin is so frusterating. I got sick too but trust me it does eventually go away. Its unbearable I know. It sounds like we have similar PCOS cases. Mine is mild too I got my AF monthly but just didnt ovulate. And when I was on Met I had way longer cycles. Dont be upset that you have gone 44 days my cycle went to 65+ days and after two cycles I got my BFP. Try to stick with it if you can. I found always taking it with food helped a lot. I think you have to find what works for you though. There lots of advice on here but you really have to listen to your own body and try different things.

I hope that helps

Hi all.
SaraB - congrats on your bfp! Definitely stay on the met. Don't take advice from a GP from a walk in clinic! I have found those kind of dr's 1st most don't even know what pcos is, let alone why one would be on metformin for it. Go by what an OB or RE would tell you, and the well informed ones will tell you to stay on Met at least thru the 1st trimester, and some will even have you stay on the whole pg. I also got pg from the met only with my dd, and I stayed on it thru 1st trimester then weaned off.

Danielac - don't stop the met! It will get better, and you will still have ocassional s/e but it is worth it. Just make sure you are taking it with milk and either during or after a meal. You can also change your diet, which will help.

I just started met Oct.16th. I've noticed the s/e when I eat things I know I should eat.......like ice cream. Other than that nothing too bad. I guess I'm here looking for encouragement. I haven't had a/f since 2004 and haven't had a/f on my own since 2002. Has anyone else gone years with no a/f and had met work for them? I'm lost.

Good Luck to All of you!! My RE said that it is still controversial whether to continue to take Metformin while pregnant but he told me to stay on it as long as I could. I did get preg. 3 times unfortunately lost 3 times but every time he wanted me to stick w/ 1500mg. I have read some studies that do show potential for miscarriage if you stop it. He did say that after the first trimester when I would go to my reg. OB that they may reccommend I stop taking it. I havent gotten that far yet so havent had to decide. Best of Luck to all of you - this site helps so much especially staying positive. Thanks.

Congratulations on your BFP - I have heard that if you are on Metformin, you should continue for the first trimester to reduce the risks of miscarriage, but if you are unhappy with what your doctor has said may be worth getting a second opinion - afterall you have baby to think about now as well!!! Wishing you a happy healthy pregnancy xxxx

Sara... I was also scared to stop metformin when I became preggo, but my RE insisted. I actually stopped it at 6 weeks and it did not affect the baby or me. Today, I have a beautiful baby girl! Goodl uck hon!

I'm about to start Met and my GP said he'd want me to stop taking it as soon as we are pg. I agree with a lot of you, though, and think (if a BFP happens) I should keep taking it to prevent MC and GD. I'm not sure what my OBGYN's opinion is on the matter, I can't get in to see her until January! But, if I get pg on met, maybe she'll see me then and say I can keep taking it. I'm just hoping to feel better and maybe get a BFP! The rest, we can handle later.
