Thanks Sunsicle. I am going to wait to talk to my RE next week. I trust his opinion more.
I have never been so worried before in my life. I analyze absolutely every twitch in my body! I haven't had a u/s or any blood work yet and I am only guessing I am 6 wks along. This is scary stuff.

Met really is a wonder drug. I've been monitoring for ovulation for a year and nothing. Finally I was diagnosed with PCOS and started on Met. This is my first month on Met. I started Met on Sept 29, got af on Oct 1, and got my first positive OPK this morning! It may not result in pg but it's nice to at least have some hope. It's so frustrating when you test month after month and never ovulate.

Aside from the ovulation, Met has helped in many other ways. Since I went off of bc a year ago, I've had horrible acne. I also used to get horrible gas every time I would eat. Now, my face is completely cleared up and the gas is all gone. I do occassionally get naseau or diarreah with Met, but I take a couple of Pepto Bismal pills and feel better within 30 minutes. I've also found it helps if I take Met at least 1/2 hour before I eat. Also, I've found that I don't have any symptoms if I take it with yogart. The benefits of Met definately outweigh the side effects!

SaraB--Congratulations!! I hope everything continues to go well for you and that you have a happy ending to your story! I haven't been pg yet, but we are trying, and when I spoke to my doctor about the met after BFP, she said they recommend staying on it for at least the first 12 weeks. But, as others have said, different doctors have different recommendations. Best of luck!!

DanielC- Trust me I know how frustrating the met s/e's can be!! I've been on it and off it again 3x so far because of how sick it was making me. My doctor has recently restarted me on the met again, but on the ER version that you said you're on. Does your doctor have you taking it all at once or several times throughout the day? My doc suggested I take it all with my evening meal, and that does seem to be working for me. Just an idea if that's not what you're doing now!

So I thought I would give a update on my Met or no met situation. I went back to the walk in clinic and saw a different Dr. This one I really like and will likely be my new family Dr. Well this new Dr looked at my blood work and U/S and said NOT to go off Met. It really makes a person crazy how every Dr is different. It just says to me how important this website and all you girls are. We have to look out for ourselves and our bodies. My new Dr says I already seem to be more than well informed and I could probably teach him a few things. Ha Ha Thank you so much Girls! Its not just the good advice you give but also the strength to stand up for myself and MY body.

Hi Sara! Congrat on your PFP!!!

My DR said that once I was pregnant I would go off the Met as well. And of course, like you, that makes me nervous. Did your DR give you a reason why to stay on the Met based on your bloodwork? Did he see something the other DR didn't look for? I ask because I want to be prepared when that time comes for me.

Thanks!

My RE told me that staying on the met for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy reduces the risk of birth defects and miscarriage. That is why he tells his patients to stay on it for 12 weeks.

On my first visit with the Dr that said to stay on met I explained to him that the other Dr said to go off it but I chose not too. My theroy is that something has happened in my body because of the Met that caused me to get pg obviously a hormone shift of some kind. If after I get pg I throw off my body back into the state that I couldnt get pg by stopping the Met, I would say my chances of having a M/C is likely as my body has a hard time regulation hormones without the assistance of Met.

I explained that to him, he said that made sense to him so told me to stay on it for now. Then a couple days later in my next appt with him he told me not to stop Met. He had done some research (what kind I dont know) and feels my best chances are to stay on it.

I hope that helps.

When I started taking metformin this year, my gynaecologist told me to continue it to 12 weeks gestation should I become pregnant. She later said to continue it til 6 months gestation. I know that if I do become pregnant on met, I would definitely continue it til 12 weeks at least and then discuss it again with my doctor. But so far, still waiting for that BFP!

i've heard many conflicting stories about met and pregnancy. i just saw my regular endocrinologist who asked with the RE was planning on doing with my met during pregnany. she strongly recommended seeing a high risk OB at least once to discuss my options before changing anything with my met, now or later. she said it would be a hard choice to make - stay on it just for the first trimester, or through the whole pregnancy. apparently she has seena few other pts like me, who once they discontinued their met, did not have good outcomes. i'm leaning towards just staying on it throughout the pregnancy. since most of the damage (if there was any, of course) would be done in the first trimester (when everything is forming) anyways, whats the difference? definitely scared to not be on anything that could help this pregnancy carry through, while still paranoid about taking any meds!!!

Sara B- I refused to go off of Met when my doctor wanted me to as well for fear of miscarriage. DS was born in Dec 06 the same month the FDA issued a report saying that taking it in pregnancy (for women w/ PCOS) decreases the risk of miscarriage. I think you're smart to continue...

Good Luck!
Terri

Thanks Terri, I am going to continue to take it till 12 weeks but I will go from 1500- 1000 until then. My Fertility dr said I dont need to be on it at all since everything is healthy and my numbers are great. But I am to scared still so I will just ween off slowly up until the 12th week. I couldnt bear the thought of losing it and feeling guilty. I just go back from a u/s and saw the Heartbeat so I am obvioulsy doing something right!! :0)

Congrats on your BFP!! I saw my RE yesterday and she put me on met. She gave me a packet so in the event that I get my BFP in the mext 60 days that I should call the office but not to stop the met. I guess every office has a protocol that they work with. I work in the medical field and I always end up on the L&D floor most of the pts end up coming off met between 12 and 24 weeks.

Hi! Thanks for your post! I started met about 14 days after starting AF and I am TTC. I am hoping I didn't mess anything up by doing it this way. Should I have waited to start the met until my next cycle came? I am worried because I too haven't had a positive OPK and my periods don't come without the help of Provera. Should I not take the Provera if my AF doesn't come? What if I get pregnant right before I start taking the next round of Provera and it doesn't show up on the PG test? Ahhh!!!

Kristi,

Thats what happened to me. I was susposed to start taking Provera but we decided I would wait till after our vacation. When I got home from vacation I found out i was pregnant. So if I took the provera I might of messed up my chance at a ovulation who knows. So be careful and try to time it right.
