Well, I am 8wks pregnant. I just came from an OB doctors appt yesterday. I asked him if I should stay on the Metformin while pg? (reminder: this isn't the doctor who diagnosed me, and doesn't seem to have much knowledge in the topic) He stated he just read a study that says it can increase possible fetal motility (or something like that) and said he reccomends me to go off. But then from what I have read, and from some ladies on here, I should stay on or it will increase the possibility of m/c. He also said he never heard of these studies, that could raise the chance of m/c without metformin.I am sort of stuck here. We leave for a 3 week vacation on Saturday. I am wondering if I should stay on, or continue? He gave me a copy of the study. But to be honest it looked like it was done with Diabetic woman, not related to PCOS. But the conclusion was a summary between the affects of Metformin and Pregnancy. Is that still relatable to PCOS and Metformin during pg? I know that many of you guys are not doctors. But I would love to hear if any advice you have received from your doctors, or studies to support your advice. We had an u/s yesterday and the baby looked fine, and the heart rate was 160. So from what they said, that is good. I just want to make a desicion on the Metformin now and I knew that this place would be the best informative about the question. Thank you all!
I don't know alot about Met. use during pg. I have read that it decreases your chances of m/c to 49%. I only read from this site and other sites about Met. that is where I get most of my info. If you trust your DR. I would do what he say's. My DR. said it would be ok for me to continue with Met. even during my pg. I visit other messages boards and have talked to a woman who had 3 m/c.
Two of the m/c's she was not taking Met. (she also has pco) . The next 2 pg's she was on met. and had healthy babies. She went off Met. acciendtally got pg. but it ended in m/c.
I don't know if it was the Met. that helped her have 2 successful pgs. but it sure seems like it.
I had a missed m/c back in April, After she told me that I ask my OB to put me on met.
Good Luck! Whatever you decide I hope you have a very successful Pg.

My doctros we fine with me staying on it while pregnant but seemed more of the attitude that "It won't hurt but she's crazy to think it's SOOOO important..." Although my second OB (we moved when I was 18 weeks pregnant) said I may as well go off at 28 weeks because after that it wasn't doing anything. I don't get his reasoning... I stayed on till 38 weeks (wanted to be off in case of a c-section...)
I believe there is a sticky on the pregnancy forum with some studies on met and pregnancy and why it's good.
eta I don't know about "fetal motility." My baby moved around a lot but I liked it. I always knew he was alive and well.

I stayed on Met for the first tri-mester. Worked great for me. I had also heard that going off of it "could" increase the chance of a m/c.
GOOD LUCK
CONGRATS!!!!!

I was just put on Met b/c of multiple m/c's, and a diagnosis of PCOS, even though I don't have a hard time GETTING pg, I just have a hard time KEEPING the pregnancy. My doctor told me about the study where women who went off Met during pg had an increased rate of m/c, and women who stayed on (these were women w/a history of m/c) had a much lower rate of m/c.
Maybe you should consult with the doctor who put you on the Met in the first place?
firstly congrats on your pregnancy you lucky thing!!
My gyn said something like we dont know how safe it is when your pregnant, but i would be too scared to stop taking it in case of m/c. i was thinking when i fall pregnant i'll change doc's maybe you should do the same or at least get a second opinion

My RE told me that Met is a class B drug, which means they don't know one way or the other if it's harmful to the baby. There's no conclusive evidence that it hurts the baby, but it hasn't been classified as safe either. He told me his tends to leave his patients on the Met until they see a heartbeat, and then slowly taper off of the Met. But he also said lots of Drs. leave their patients on Met too. Sounded to me like no one really knows for sure.

My doctor told me that when I get pregnant I will stay on the Met, and that it does not hurt the pregnancy at all.

I stayed on met through both my pregnancies and both babies turned out perfect. My doctor wanted me to stay on it and I also used it when my daughter was 6 months old and still nursing to get pregnant with my son. I started using it again just a couple of weeks ago (son is now 7 months old) while breastfeeding. My doctors say its relatively safe to use both while pregnant and nursing. (not too many studies are done on pregnant or nursing women though as who would volunteer to put their babies at risk just for the sake of a trial) They rarely rate anything as completely safe for this reason. However, for what its worth, I haven't had any problems with it.
Okay, now I'm worried. I'm 5dpo, and have been having heart palpitations for a few days now. My doctor this morning told me to go off the Met (I've been on 500mg only) because it sounds like my blood sugar is bottoming out. Is this going to cause me to miscarry if I am indeed PG?

For what its worth, I don't think going off Met would CAUSE you to miscarry, I think being on it just decreases your chances of miscarriage. (I'm certainly no expert though). However, do keep in mind that your health needs to be the priority. You certainly aren't going to be successful keeping a pregnancy if you get really ill. You need to take care of yourself first. If you read the message boards, there are plenty of women that didn't take met that still have successful pregnancies, so don't worry too much about it yet. Good luck!
Hi Jamsgirl-- I was on 2500 mg Met when I got pregnant last March, stayed on it but m/c anyway. So it's not a miracle drug, you can still m/c even if you stay on it. It sounds like a lot of PCOS symptoms go away with pregnancy, so it could just be that you don't need it anymore. Trishain is right--keep yourself healthy first!
