Question Metformin & pregnancy

Hi there,

This is my first post on this thread so be kind!

I found out I have PCOS last year, in November. My FS prescribed Metformin, which I started taking in December. I had a period (my first in about 4 months) within a week of starting Metformin, and fell pregnant in January (found out in February). My FS told me to stop taking the Metformin as soon as I told him I was pregnant. Unfortunately I miscarried on 31 March. I've had 2 periods since and now appear to have 41 day cycles. My FS told me to start taking the Metformin again after my first period after the miscarriage, then a few weeks later told me to stop to give my body a break. I have my first appt with FS (since miscarriage) at the end of this month and I'm sure he will tell me to start taking Metformin again.

My question is this ..... I have read alot of stuff on the internet about women being told to continue taking metformin for the first trimester because it reduces the risk of miscarriage. My FS is adamant that I should stop taking it as soon as I know I'm pregnant. It's very confusing. I should say that I am in Australia and maybe the doctors over here have different opinions, but it seems different even from state to state over here so I'm not sure why their opinions would differ.

What is your experience with Metformin and pregnancy. Is it possible I miscarried because I stopped taking the Metformin?? Any replies would be greatly appreciated, so I can tell my FS about it cause he thinks I'm crazy for even suggesting it!

Thanks heaps

There has been a study concerning this issue. My suggestion is that you gather the information about metformin use during the 1st trimester and miscarriage rates, and bring him the information. At least then he won't behave as if you are nuts for suggesting it. Also, check on the "Pregnancy" discussion section of this board, there are several threads about this topic! Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!
