Hi everyone, I was just curious to see if UK cysters who were prescribed Metformin, were given blood tests before going on it? and also if you have blood tests while on it to check liver function ect? When I was prescribed met, I had to pay privately to get it and I was not tested at all, I was not even tested while I was taking it. I want to go back on metformin but im slightly worried incase there is a problem with my liver and I will not know about it.
I would be grateful for any advice
Carrie

Hello, I don't know what the actual rules are about testing etc., but when I was on Metformin, I was given blood tests every 4-6 months. I was prescribed it by a PCOS clinic who were monitoring me. If it wasn't for this, I would imagine I would have been forgotten about and probably not tested.
I'm sure someone here can advise you better

Thankyou everyone for your replies, I have an appointment with my GP next week so I will discuss it with him when I am there. I have started taking cinnamon capsules and I am having great results with them, if it continues I might not need to go back on met.
Thanks again
Carrie

Aside from a hormone profile.. no... I wasn't tested for IR or anything... but I was told to come back after 6 months for a checkup to see if the medication was making a difference.

Just while we are on the subject of metformin. I went to the docs this week to see if he would put me on met to try and make my periods more regular etc. He said that he had never heard something so stupid and that people with PCOS and who have not got diabetes should not go on met. He said that he had never ever heard of a woman with PCOS being perscribed met. I gave him this website address and told him to have a look for himself and to see how many women across the world were taking met. He looked at me as if I was a complete fool but I had been building myself up for going on met and actually thinking it might help me concieve. So no luck there he defo wouldn't put me on it so im back to square one. Am soooo peeed off at the minute and still have not had a bloody period in 15 weeks and counting and am not preggers.

Kelly> god... that makes me SO ANGRY. Yet another example of useless NHS doctors not looking out for their patients. I'd suggest you get a second oppinion.. but it's so hard in the uk to do such a thing. I doubt he'll even look at the website... doctors in this country are so arrogant and refuse to accept they're wrong. -_-

I wasn't given any treatment by my doctor just told to lose weight. (only 2 stone over weight) When i came on this site and seen how many people have been given treatment i made another appointment to see a different gp. Now am going for a ultra scan next week to make sure it is PCOS as i didn't have one when i was dx. Then i am going to see a gyne to talk about treatment like metformin. I am ttc at the moment i just told my gp how unhappy i was i have been trying to lose weight for years. Go and see a different doctor and stamp your feet! lol Think the first doctor was looking at my age as i am 21 (22 in Dec) and thinking i have lots of time. I know i have this as an advantage but i don't want to wait years before i get treatment then it might take years with treatment before i get pg.
Carrie76 - I have liver function tests every 6 months by my request. It's our responsibility to ask for these tests. I didnt' have any blood sugar tests prior to going on it.
Kelly - Tell your GP to look it up on www.gpnotebook.co.uk...it's a resource used by doctors so he may trust it more. If he still refuses I would talk to your local PCT and see if you can change to a different GP. If he honestly hasn't heard of using metformin to treat pcos then he is seriously out of touch with current medical practice!
