Points: 449.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 449.00 | Metformin Question I'm on Metformin as of one month ago, and I'm having trouble with some of the side effects. Help! I have problems with keeping my blood sugar level high enough...which makes me woozy when I really can't afford to be. I've adjusted my diet, eating lots of fruit and proteins. I work at a hospital and even consulted the nutritionists there. I am still on BCP until we start Clomid in October (we're having an IUI done that month), but the doc wanted me to start the Met early so that I'm already on it prior to the treatment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Take care! Lots of love, luck and baby dust to all!

I'm not sure what dosage you are on or when you are taking the met each day, but my doctor started me out on 1000mg/day (500mg twice per day). Apparently, starting at a lower dosage and working your way up is supposed to make the side effects less. The first two weeks were kinda rough, but after that, I don't have the side affects any longer. I also take the met with a meal each time and I think that helps.
From what I've read about met, I didn't think it was capable of making your blood sugar drop. I may be wrong, but from what I understand, it only makes you more sensative to insulin and makes you use the insulin that you have in your system. I could be wrong though. You may want to ask your doctor about that.
Good luck to you and I hope that the side effects subside soon and you're able to tolerate it more easily.

The doc actually did start me out on the 500 mg. twice a day...and after two weeks I was moved up to 1000 mg. twice a day. I only had trouble with the side effects for a couple of days at the lower dose, but jumping to the higher dose has given me more trouble. You said your first two weeks were kind of rough...I just finished my second week at the higher dose, so maybe I'll be able to level out somehow.
Thanks again for the advice. I love this site...everyone is really supportive. It's nice to know my hubbie and I are not alone in this.

Hopefully the side effects will even out after two weeks...and if not, I would talk to the doctor about them, especially since you know the side effects stopped on the lower dosage. My doctor will not increase the dosage of met until I've been on the current dosage for 30 days. He says it takes that long to see if the lower dosage is going to work.
Good luck to you and hopefully things will even out soon!
