I was wondering if it is normal for a doctor to put you on metformin when you glucose levels are normal? I have pcos and I cannot lose weight so low carbs make sense but should I be taking this medication?
It really is the Fasting Insulin Test, not the Glucose test that should determine if you are Insulin Resistant. Glucose levels fluctate and can be low at times. Some doctors are beginning to believe that everyone with PCOS has some for of IR even though some don't test positive for it. I think you should try it for a while and see if it helps you lose weight with low-carbing.
Be sure to ask your doctor for a Fasting Insulin Test if you really want to determine what is going on. Obviously, you shouldn't be on the Met for a while before the test, because it would affect the outcome.
Good luck!

My endo put me on Met, based on the results of my fasting insulin test. My glucose is normal.

Me too, me too . I'm on met because my fasting insulin level is pretty high. My fasting glucose is just fine. So, yes it makes sense that your dr put you on met but I would suggest having your dr test your insulin level to see if you are IR. Good Luck!!

My fasting insulin was 3 and my glucose was 85- is this normal? I am on 1500 mg met but considering just doing the LC diet- I did both and got really sick- I had an insulin reaction.
ANy thoughts as if I should be on MEt? Well besides cystic ovaries and my testosterone is 45- and LH FSH ratio is off.
Hmmm...tough call, because your insulin and glucose numbers are great. A three is excellent for fasting insulin.
Are you TTC? What are your symptoms? Are you trying to lose weight? Are you trying to regulate your periods?

SHoot the moon lindy-
yes I am ttc #2 for 3 years now- My LHand FSH ratio is off I know for sure- I have gained weight in my belly in the last yr or so. I have lost 8 lbs since Dec. I am not really Overweight. So I am confused- maybe the Metformin will lower the LH... ya think?
I O every month- possibly a weak once since prog. levels are always low at 7 or 8.... ANd I get my af regulary every 28-29 days, but here lately I am O'ing sooner like on cd11 or 12 so my LP is 14 is this good????
I am the wrong person to ask about that since have never had regular AF and only ovulate with injections, however since you are TTC, I definetly would stay on the Met. I know two girls that were very similar to you--not IR, regular periods, etc, but couldn't get pg until they added the Met. The Met could lower the LH, but it might take a while. For some it takes over year to regulate themselves which leads to my next question for you.
Are you going to add Clomid and/or a trigger shot to give yourself a stronger ovulation? How long have you been on Met?

I have only been on Met 3 months at the beginning of March- I don't know if I will do Clomid or not- Ind doesn't pay for any of it- I have done CLomid before and Injections- failed of course.
Well since I am not IR and take Met should I still low carb or will it hurt me? I need lose 10-15 more lbs to be at a healthy weight.
I don't see why it would hurt you. What kind of reaction did you have before? When I do the very very low carb, I feel pretty yucky for a few days....dizzy and low energy. I did Adkins induction for two weeks to get a jumpstart(except I ate peanuts all the time) and lost 10 lbs. Then I gradually added some carbs back in and was able to steadily lose weight.
If you feel too bad doing then, just cut back as much as you can. I had such a severe addiction that I had to gradually ease into it, because I knew it would never work cold turkey. Getting off the Dr. Peppers was the hardest....hmmmm, Dr. Peppers....sorry, I digress. I cut out one item every few days so my system wouldn't be in shock.
There is also the Insulin Resistance diet. It is a book that teaches you how to match carbs with protein. It is very popular on this site for those who can't handle Adkins.
I know what you mean about the insurance coverage...it is rough. If you do get to the point where you have saved some more money and can do injections again, I know of several who didn't get pg with injections until they added the Met. Do you have a good Dr? If you need one in Houston....mine is the best.

SHoot the Moon lindy- My Dr is Dr. Gill at Houston Fertility Institute.
Patty- I don't have any problems with the Met now- I am on 1500 and it doesn't bother me anymore- It did when I wouldn't eat and then would take it- not good at all- I sure learned my lesson!
Heather- I think I have heard of Dr. Gill, but am not sure. If you ever feel like you need a new doctor or want to get a second opinion, Dr. Dunn is wonderful and is always on the cutting edge. He has the highest success rate in Houston and considered the best RE in Texas. He is very understanding and considerate. His wife had fertility problems, so he really understands what we are going through. When I went in for my first visit, he had actually read my chart before I got there and wasn't flipping through the pages reading while I was there. He made me feel like a real person. I know of 4 ladies that have had success with him, not including myself.
I don't know how you feel about your doctor, but just wanted you to know about Dr. Dunn if you are interested. PM me if you want more info.
