Awhile back, my doc started me on Metformin. I quickly increased to 2000 mg per day (1000 am and pm) with no stomach/intestinal distress. I was loving it. I lost all sugar cravings, all desire to binge eat and was losing weight like gangbusters.
My personal life threw me a big curve ball and I missed all my meds for a couple of days and now I can't seem to get back on the Metformin. I have severe diarreah each time I try take it.
I told my doc about it and he prescribed Actos. Well, not only is the Actos horribly expensive, but I don't feel any different taking it and I'm gaining weight back that I lost on the Metformin. I want my Metformin back, but need to figure out some way to get rid of that awful diarreah. Someone on another board mentioned taking calcium with it. Does that work? Has anyone else found a way to combat the diarreah? How come it wasn't causing me any problems before I missed those doses?
If it makes any difference, I am not wanting to conceive right now.
Did you try easing your way back into the metformin? I didn't take it for a few days due to being sick. When I was feeling better I started by taking 500mg first and seeing how I felt, then 1000mg. If I had any side effects I just stayed at that dose until the side effects subsided. I'm on Met ER 2000 mg.
As for the calcium, I haven't heard about it helping or hurting.
HTH,

A few weeks ago i missed taking Met because i had a terrible case of the flu and was asleep most of the time to take it. Anyway, once i started taking it again on schedule i started on 500mg again for the first two days. I wasnt sure if it would make me sick. Then i went back to taking 1000mg and was fine. Maybe you just need to start again at a low dosage and move up, talk to your doctor
Hope things work out for ya, best wishes!

Welcome to Soulcysters! I know that when I've missed doses my side effects return but they go away after a while if you can stick it out. Also I can't eat certain foods anymore. For me Apples pears and grapefruit are no nos. Other people have different things that trigger them.
