When you increase the medication it can increase s/e's, but I generally find they subside within a week of upping the dosage.
Metformin is more affected by diet than anything. If you eat greasy foods, high carb foods, high sugar, lettuce, high fat, alcohol; it can cause bad GI s/e's.
I found that after I adjusted to the Metformin I had far less s/e's though, no matter what I eat/drink.
