Do any of you take a brand of metformin that smells really bad? I have been taking met on and off for about 4 years and I got a new bottle of met that I ordered online and it smells like rotten fish its horrendous!
I was wondering if it was 1. they use a cod oil filler or 2. The online compnay was 100% legit and I got out of date meds....

My insurance wouldnt cover Metformin so I had been paying full price; about $50. One day I went to Rite Aid and they began offering a discount program since it's considered diabetes medication. I now pay $10 and guess what, I got the same odor from the Metformin that you mentioned. I would almost describe it as having an ammonia like scent, just very strong...I asked if they changed the meds since I was paying a cheaper price? They said NO, but I really don't believe them.
I thought it was just me...

A couple of months ago when I picked up my prescription I was told it was being made by a different manufacturer. I noticed the smell right away and now have to hold the bottle away from me when I open it up.
Yes!!! I get my met from Walmart and used to get it from Walgreens! It does smell horrible! Yes, it does smell "fishy" I don't know what they do to it to make it smell like that, but it sucks!
The metformin that smells is made by a manufacturer that does not put a coating on the tablets. I guess this helps keep the cost down some. It is a generic form but, in the United States at least, the quality of the medication is just as good as any other brand of metformin. I take generic metformin manufactured by Caraco Pharmaceuticals and it does not smell. It is the 500 mg dose. Maybe you could ask if your pharmacies can get the same brand if the smell makes it difficult to take.

Mine are stinky too. I think that it's that the generic one's are smelly.

It's so funny that this thread came up. When I first started taking Met about a year ago I didn't notice a smell, then I switched to a local pharmacy and right away noticed a smell. It's gross. It smells like fish food.

I aksed my pharmacist yesterday and he said its because it doesnt have a coating and they use cod fish oil as a filler its not any less potent and it has nothing to do with the shelf life. Still a nasty smell!
