Metformin does have an awful smell. My grandmother is a nurse and she told me that the reason is because it is made from iguana spit. My first thought was who in the world figured out that worked for insulin issues!
If the pill you are given for metformin is to big try asking your doctor or pharmisist for a lower dosage. In the end you would have to swallow more pills, but if they are smaller maybe it would be easier! My grandmother is on the same dosage I am, but she has 1000mg tablets and mine are 500mg. Much smaller and easier for me to swallow even if i have to take two instead of one.
Mine didnt always then when I noticed I asked the pharmacy and they said they had to change vendors and theres does smell like that ... icky fish !! Mine is from TEVA USA..

Certain Generic brands of Metform have a fishy smell to them. Some do not. It's the luck of the draw. My 850mg ones are from GenPharm and instead of a fishy smell, I get a random raspberry type after taste on my tongue when I take them. Could just be me, but I get it every time. When I was on the 500mg tabs, they had the funny smell.

Reason: spelling
hmmm....If there is an inconsistency with the smell and or taste could there also be an inconsistency of the medicine itself? I wonder why there would be noticeable differences.
In general, there can be a lot of inconsistencies in generics. They are made in so many different places and by different companies. If it was inconsistent in the same bottle I might be concerned, but not so much by what I am reading here. I really hope I don't ever get the fishy ones though!
usually the inconsistencies in the smells/shapes/tastes don't effect the active ingredants in a medication. (wow my spelling is all over the place today) As long as the pill itself has the appropriate amount of the medication in it is what matters.
