Ok ladies, new to this site. I think it is great.

Was diagnosed with PCOS November of 07. Started Met May of 08 FINALLY after begging for a year for help from my doc.

Went on vacay for 8 days and got off it like and idiot. Starting back today.

I do have a quick ?? for those you have had success on it. Did you take it AM or PM or do you think it really even matters?

lyndie... I think it depends on what kind you are taking... I am taking regular Met... so I take it morning and evening... I moved down to 1000 mg with the pregnancy... so I take 500 in the AM and 500 in the PM... before I was taking it with each meal... so three times a day...

I believe if you take the XR Met you only have to take it once a day... and it probably doesn't matter when... though I'm sure others can answer that question for you.

good luck!

gertiegirl

thanks so much for responding

Also, my doc has me on just 500mg a day.......do you think I should increase it? I hear all these ladies say they take 1000mg and 1500mg.....but all I take is 500mg....I don't want to have to wait forever for this stuff to work :0/

I just started last night and so far - so good.
I had a brief and virtually painless "episode" last night before bed, but it really wasn't that bad at all.
Thanks so much for all of your positive stories. I was too scared to try Met before reading this thread and I'm really glad I did.

Hi Ladies,
I have been taking Metformin for exactly 2 months tomorrow and I feel great( my skin feels wonderful, I have lost 13lbs, my hirtuism has slowed tremendously) and have also had some success. After being on met for 35-38 days i got a visit from AF and I also "O"ed for the first time in a long time. Af was due on Jul 2 but since I "o"ed late I am currently waiting either on AF or hopefullly BFP!!!!!!!!! with in the next 2 days. The waiting is killing me.

Hi! Im Jennifer and im new to this site. I've been diagnosed with pcos and it sucks! I think ive had it since I was about 16 but nothing was ever done about it until now. I recently started taking metformin and so far so good. Im taking 2000mg a day. One in the morning and then one every four or five hours. I currently weigh 271.4 and thats down from 282. Its so hard to remember but im dying to lose this weight. Ive red about every post on the site and im somewhat differernt from others. I have the weight problem, the hairy chin and back cramps during my period that are extremely terrible! However, I get my period right on time every month. Has anyone lost a great deal of weight by taking their pills at a certain time or is it better to spread them out? Thanks ladies!!

I take 500 mg of met 3 times a day, but my doctor and I decided that since I usually only eat lunch & dinner (i know it is a big no-no, but I just can not eat breakfast- and if I do, I eat lunch late and end up eating dinner right before bedtime) I should only take the medicine when I eat a meal. If I eat breakfast, I take the med, but if I don't, then I only take it with lunch & dinner.

I find that I have to take the med when I eat, otherwise I have MISERABLE gastro-intestinal cramps. I will usually take the medicine while I am cooking or fixing lunch/dinner. Probably about 10-15 minutes before I actually eat.

I did have trouble with gastric pains for a few weeks once I started the medicine, even with taking them when I eat. After about 3 weeks it stopped. (It was not daily stomach pains, but quite frequent, and it was mostly uncomfortable, but not unbearable.) I have been on the met for a while now and I still find that if I take them on an empty stomach and don't eat right around the same time, I will be very nausious and have intestinal cramping.

Good luck with it !!

JenK62220

Welcome !! I have lost (to date) 64.5 pds. At my heaviest, 6 years ago, I was 274 but I leveled out somewhere around 250-260 for the last 5 years. Since I started on the metformin (500 mg) I have gone down to 194. I hate to say this, but it has not been hard for me at all. My desire to eat is GONE. I am no longer thinking about what we (at my office) can get for lunch as I drive in (at 7 AM !!) to work. I go shopping for food for my son (I am a single mom) and I have to remember that I need to get more food that put in my cart. Alot of times I have to force myself to eat at night because I am not hungry and feel sometimes that I could/would throw up if I were to eat a meal. A lot of times I end up eating 1/2 a PB&J sandwich along with a spoonful of PB (for the protein.)

But please keep in mind that just because it works for one person it might not work for another.

My dr also put me on aldactone, because he said research found that aldactone combined with metformin helped the symptoms of PCOS. I have been taking both from the start of November 2007.

I've been on 250 twice a day, then my doc increased it to 500 2x a day, but my stomach just couldn't handle it. So I'm cutting back to the 250 twice, let my stomach calm down. After a week, I am taking the 250 in the morning and 500 at night, try that for a week until my stomach adjusts, etc. I just can't live on Imodium.

Thumbs up You can have my metformin if you pry it from my cold dead finger!!

Iam hooked!! Went to the docs yesterday after being on Met for 2 months ten days and Ive lost 23 pounds and havent changed anything else in my life. I would be exersizing or walking more to see if I could drop more /faster but I hurt my back June 1st and am still dealing with that. So Just sitting around the house I was finaly able to loose weight.
This has never before happened to me. Ive felt broken my whole life because I dont over eat, I do eat wellish and I continued to get bigger and bigger and bigger or for years staying the same. Iam glad that Ive finaly got a chance to be who I know Iam inside . Ive got SOOOO Much more to go and I pray Met takes me along the way!!!

I am on the extended release so I take 1700mg before bed at night. I have been on it since April. I have lost 16 lbs so far and I am still losing.

I have been through 4 failed IVF cycles (not being on Met for any of them) before being on it I never got my period without either being on the pill or taking provera. This is the 2nd month in a row that I got my period on my own .

It really does work
