I am thin and I am not IR - I just got a BFP after using metformin for only a month. Without met, we had only O'd 3 X since Spetmber 06 (2 of those times were thanks to clomid). So yes, I would say that it really works!!!! Good luck!

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share that after 5 months, I finally ovulated! And that's only after 1 month of being on the Met! I started really slowly as I was scared of the side effects. It is kinda interesting to note that the day after I reached my 1500mg dosage, that was the day I ovulated! How's that for coincidence??? Although I am not confident about our BD timing for this month, I am still hoping for a BFP in 2 weeks.
By the way, I don't have much problem with my weight (except for my midsection) and I wasn't tested IR.
Alowe - I'm another thin sister who was tested and was not even close on the scale to being IR. My Dr said anything over a 12 I believe is considered IR and I was at a 3!!! If you read some of my former posts I had to fight w/ my RE specialist at the time who would not put me on the Met because of that test. My regular Dr and then another Specialist I found were the ones who listened and prescribed and I finally O'd and got a BFP on the 2000mg dose! It did take 4 months for the Met to work. Guess I have a stubborn body. I never ever ovulated on my own before Met (haven't since I've been a teen) and was Clomid resistant too.
Good luck!

Alowe - I'm thin and not IR. I had success with Met twice: last year I ovulated after one month on Met and got pregnant that same cycle. This year I ovulated after 5 weeks on Met and am in 2ww right now... I don't have a period on my own, so I love Metformin.
I LOVE METFORMIN! I just went for a blood draw to check my testosterone levels and I have gone from Total testosterone of 94 down to 50 after one month of 1000mg/day!!!! It's a miracle, I hope it continues to go down, I will be a normal healthy woman with balanced hormones once again with met's help :-) I know my ovaries probably feel relieved. Also, I am thin and not IR so for everyone who is not IR met can and will make a difference in your lab values, if you have high total testosterone do not let your doc withhold metformin because you are not IR.

Exactly!!! I really feel high testosterone levels were the main cause of why I was not ovulating on my own. Although my regular Dr. did not do tests to check my T levels and once you start Met it's kind of pointless to test levels after that because they obviously will be effected, the RE I went to who increased my Met dose to 2000mg said high T levels were most likely the problem.

Can you Ovulate and not ahve a AF? I feel stupid asking this..
Yes......if you're PG!
Other than that, no, it's the opposite. You can have a period and NOT ovulate. If you ovulate you produce Progesterone and if you don't become PG the levels of Prog will drop and this is what induces AF, it's a signal to your body to start shedding the lining of uterus. I guess there's always a chance or an exception but from what I've read it would be very very rare.
Hope this helps.

agree with Morganmarie... only exception I know of is if you have a cyst (but I don't think they are talking about our string of pearls but a big old cyst)
It's possible to have high testosterone w/o having hirsutism and other symptoms. I get one (and I mean one only) chin hair and I have a peach fuzz mustache, and my testosterone was 94. I think that all has to do with genetics how severe your symptoms are and not your actual levels, my doc tested for this because this is how she diagnoses PCOS.
I question these docs who do not try to lower a woman's T with met, or at least ask her to go on spiro and BCP for a few months to lower it. There are several studies that indicate low birth weight in babies of women with high T, more and more data are coming out indicating a major problem in women with high T. One even goes so far as to say that the teen pregnancy problem is being resolved b/c of high T in younger women, saying our young girls are not fertile. Doc's really need to get a handle on this.

Hello all.
I have been reading in here for the past several weeks off & on (lurking).
My Dr. put me on Met @ 850 mg 2X per day. I was apprehensive at first as I had already read how sick it can make you, plus the Dr. told me it most likely would make me sick for a while.
Well, I decided that once I started taking Met, I would also change my diet to what I thought would be a diet that would help curb some of the side effects of the Met. (which I needed to make changes ANYWAY!) I eat as close to the same time each day for each meal, eat smaller, healthier meals with as little sugary, high carb items as possible. If I eat bread items- I get whole wheat etc...etc... Lots of fruits / veggies, NO "Frankenfoods" & take my meds at the same time each day. I have only had 2 bouts of diarhea & only one time I felt nauseated. I have lost about 5 pounds so far- most of that in the first week. I think much of that was fluid, as my feet had been terribly swollen & I'd had AF for a MONTH solid before that.
While I wouldn't yet classify this as a total success story yet- I would call it a small step of success that I have been able to use Met with very little side effects at all & hopefully will continue to lose more weight.
Wish me luck!
I love reading the success stories here! They help out so much when you feel like giving up!!!
