I am on Met and have been since April 5, 2007. I am on 1500mg per day and no AF at all! I am not trying to get PG but have a regular AF. I have to have some blood work done in about a week do find out my hormone levels adn then back to the doctor I go. Has anyone ever had this happen with Met..no AF. I ahd heard that it could take about 6 months to regualte my hormones.

First month on metformin, 850x2, got AF on day 28 like clockwork.
This cycle, no ovulation whatsoever, no AF and now they want to
trigger my period with provera and put me on Clomid.
I'm so bummed out..I was hoping that after the first month with an on-time period that I would be ovulating again...and I'm not....
I've lost about 15-20 pounds by the way..
Anyone had this where metformin works and then doesn't? is this normal? | Hi Audrey, I'm certainly no expert but I would suggest to them upping your Met dosage to 2000mg. I have heard of irregular O on Met and I wish Dr's could tolerate a 28+ day cycle! ALOT of women have longer cycles ranging from 35-50 days.....anything over is probably excessive but pregnancy can most definitely take place w/ a late O (later than cd 14-16 which is the textbook O days but not for every woman) I had 2 long cycles on Met and got pregnant on the one I O'd on cd 24. Another girl I know on one of my other forums was on Met and O'd really really late in her cycle like on cd 40 or something like that and still got PG.
And remember you're just starting out on this medication, sometimes it takes 6 months to a year for Met to fully "kick-in" and take effect. I was on it for 3 months before any O at all and was loosing hope that it would work.
If you want to go ahead and try the Met & Clomid combo that's great, there are a lot of success stories out there combining these two meds. But if you just want to stick w/ Met, see if they will bump your dose up. You have to do what you feel most comfortable with. Good luck!

Audrey - I totally agree with Morgan on this one!! Sometime 1500mg of MET does not work with some women, but upping it too 2000mg does! But give it some time ... I took about 4 months for me to get AF when I first started out .. and even then they ranged about 35 -40 sometimes a missed one too. My last AF before I got my BFP was an induced one!
Pcos1979 - Hon, I know it's hard when the weight doesn't want to come off, it has happen to me too, but really try to re-look at your diet and try low Carb or low GI, drinks lots of water, and if you can go see a dietitian to help with portion control (that was a big one for me)! PM me if you like, and I can give you a run down on everything that worked for me!! P.S. NO diet Pills!!! They don't work ... trust me I have been on all of them!!!
Cole - Yes it does take time, but try talking to your DR to increase your dose!

My Mood: Points: 3,383.26 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,383.26 | I just started the Metformin a few days ago. Lots of side effects though (upset stomache, diarhhea, migranes, heartburn). My friend just who also has PCOS advised me that the Extended Release Metformin causes less side effects. SHe has lost about 45 pounds in about 1 year on it. She was about 185 when she started and she did not even diet!!! I hope it helps me loose the 30 or so pounds I need to loose before TTC again.
It's great reading all these success stories. Good luck to us all. |

My Mood: Points: 233.60 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 233.60 | Metformin Success Story I am new on here and honestly I don't know where to begin.
First I would like to share my success story because reading all of your other success stories actually touched me.
Last year I went to my gyno and I was explaining that I havent gottten pregnant and that I had been with my husband for 4 years and that I have really irregular menstral cycles and well my doctor did an ultrasound and bloodwork and diagnosed me w/ PCOS.
It was sad but he said he can help me get pregnant. so then I started taking a cycle of 200 mg of chlomid and then around day 14 or 15 of my cycle I would get an ultrasound to see if the follicles in my overies had matured and if they did I would get a HCG shot and that would stimulate me to ovulate. Well I did 2 cycles with no success so then my doctor recommended me to combine metformin with the chlomid. So I did and I said I was only going to try it this last month and then I was just going to wait to try to concieve at a later time and so I only did the one cycle of chlomid and metformin and I quit and gave up.
Wellllll to my surprise i started my period that following month and it was normal .... then about 2 weeks later i started spotting and I said to myself here we go agian with the wacked out periods!!! Then my breasts began to hurt BAD. So I took a HPT just to see another False result and well it came out positive. I was so happy I started to cry (still sitting on the toilet) and i started to hyperventalate. I was alone my husband was at work. and well it was all happy then i miscarried at 7 weeks. Now I dont know what I want to do this was back in january and I still want a baby like nothing else in the world but doctor referred me to a fertility specialist and I dont have the courage or the $$ to go that way.
I am now just trying to loose wieght that is why I am on phentermin and metformin and although i have on ly been on it for about 1 week I have already lost 7 pounds so i think i am just going to try to loos all the weight I can then I will ttc again or if it happens on its own with just the metformin then I would be one of the lucky ones . |

Well Im relatively new to this forum...more of a lurker than a poster for the time being, but I wanted to add my Met success story. I have yet to get a BFP, but I started on 1000mg of Met XR (extended release) back in March. I started af on my own the day after I started it (all previous cycles post partum were induced with meds). The following cycle I ovulated, but was getting 45 day cycles. So tried 50mg of clomid last cycle and even though I ovulated on day15, I didnt get pg. So, going natural again this cycle...Im on day30, but ovulated yesterday (according to a positive opk and temps). Although it would be nice to have a 28-day cycle, Im thrilled that my cycles are regular and Im ovulating. Now I just need to adjust my diet and exercise! Anyway, thanks for all the posts...very encouraging indeed!
xxx

My Mood: Points: 767.00 Bank: 78,988.48 Total Points: 79,755.48 | I am so glad I found this thread! I was recently diagnosed and given Met. On 500 right now, slowly working up to 2000. After reading about the side effects, needless to say I was nervous to start taking it. I've only been on it for about a week, and so far so good. No bad side effects, the most noticeable is just the loss of appetite (which isn't necessarily a bad thing!). Thanks for sharing all of your success stories; it helps make this process a lot less scary! |
