I would have gas, diarrhea, etc... with the higher doses, but it helps if you lay off refined carbs and stuff. Try upping your dose during a weekend when you don't have to be anywhere and by the end of the weekend, the new dose was usually mostly better. I know you are new, so not sure if you can see my signature, but it helped me conceive three times within 3-4 months of being on it, so it has definitely been my wonder drug (of course it doesn't always work for everyone, but its worth a shot). You can also search other threads for other recommendations on how to lessen the side effects. I've heard taking b-12 (I've never tried it myself though) and staying away from carbs and fatty foods. After your body adjusts you'll be able to add more foods back in (although with PCOS, the less refined carbs you have the better usually... but I still eat my chocolate!) Good luck!

I have been very strict about the diet I am on, no sugars or very minimal and very little carbs. I will try the B12 but I read that was for the low bp not the nausea that goes along with this. I can handle the diarrrhea LOL but the constant sea sickness feeling is really packin the punch.
I did read your signature...that is so wonderful I am very happy for you
I hope it is the answer as well for us.
Thanks so much for the response. |

But my body is different now, so here goes. Also seeing the Gyno tomorrow about BC I am dreading that only because I want to go on the right one... pray for me.

| I'm not sure what you mean? My doctor doesn't test for IR, if thats what you are talking about. He just prescribes met regardless. Good luck though!

My Mood: Points: 412.90 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 412.90 | Hello TrishainAZ,
Congrats on your pregnancy!!! What dosage of met did your dr start you on? I have been on met before and I think I experienced every side effect there is with it. Maybe the dosage was too high to start with. Any suggestions?

My Mood: Points: 103,525.57 Bank: 1,706.15 Total Points: 105,231.72 | Thanks! I start on 500 mg and add 500 mg each week to reach my final dose. (as you can see by my signature, I've been on all different doses depending on what the current thought was at the time.. hasn't seemed to matter which dose I've been on, I get pregnant 3-4 months after starting regardless.) I'm thin and don't know if I am IR. I definitely get the side effects, but as you may have read with my past posts, they get better after a day or two (until I up the dose again!) until I've been on it for about a month and then my side effects start to taper off. Good luck!

I have been very sick and I am taking it slowly...maybe you should try 500mg the first day to see if you have any side affects first.
Good luck!! |

My Mood: Points: 2,627.24 Bank: 48.45 Total Points: 2,675.69 | Hi girls - I really needed to hear some success stories. My RE just increased my dose of met to 1000 per day. Since october when I was on 500 mg I have lost 29 pounds without really changing my diet. The side effects are not that bad. I REALLY hope that this will be my miracle pill. I am so happy for those of you it has worked for!!

Points: 605.67 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 605.67 | Kerri- (I spell my name the same way by the way!) have you tried drinking lots of water when taking your pill? Also, make sure you're eating something right before taking a pill. Eating plus combining at least 16oz of water really really helped me w/nausea. I only felt nausea 2x when taking the Met and it was only because I did not eat enough before hand. Also, contrary to what most say about eating carbs when taking Met, you may be cutting too many carbs out. If you do eat carbs, stick to the NO WHITE Carbs rule. I did not drastically reduce my carbs and I was never sick on the Met and I was up to 2000mg/day. The only diarrhea experience for me was when I ate anything deep fried, that was a big NO-NO for me!
I did loose weight on the Met, it was gradual loss not overnight but I'm a thin cyster so I didn't need to loose any. It really does curb your appetite, there were days I just had no desire to eat much of anything. That changed when becoming PG by the way! Are you a thin cyster?
I also took extra B-12complex vitamins while on the Met and I never got tired like some of the women complain about so I believe they help.
All in all, I always felt great on Met! I just started off very slowly, 2 weeks on 250mg/day, another 2 weeks on 500mg/day, another 2 weeks on 1000mg/day until I was up to 2000mg. 2000mg was the dose that finally got me to ovulate and become preggie.
Good luck TTC on Met! It does work!

I hope that your body will adjust within the month or whatever time frame your Dr. has set out for you. Also, have you looked in to which drugs you should not take while on Metformin? A very very helpful website to learn all about Metformin is at http://www.medicinenet.com/metformin-oral/article.htm . Check it out. Take care!

Points: 1,768.87 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 1,768.87 | I really appreciate eveyone being so open about their met experiences. This is now my 3rd day on 500mg, with no side effects yet. I'm tempted to up my dose by 250 mg tomorrow. Am I rushing things? How long does it take to see the bad effects if I am going to see them? Mr dr. told me to up my dose when I didn't see any more side effects...is that now??
Thanks thanks! |
