I too have had success with met. I started it on Nov 19th and have worked up to 100 mg /day. I am starting 1500mg/ day tomorrow, So far, I got my Af for the first time since may 2006. This is the first one I have had in years without the aid of birth control pills. I have also lost 10 lbs in this month of being on met. I had tummy troubles the first few weeks but I feel great now. So much more energy and my hair has stopped falling out.!!!!

Just wanted to share my success story with on Met. I am currently on 2000mg. I have always had absent periods (we're talking no period for like a year or more) and have had bouts of unexplained weight gain although now I'm around 118lbs so slim for my height. Also had awful cystic-like acne at age 22 but it did go away for good after taking Tretracycline for about a year.

On my third month of Met, a couple days after my first dose of 2000mg, I ovulated for the first time on my own since I've been a teen. I was charting. I did not get pregnant but still this is huge for me! My old RE did not want me to start the Met, saying it would not help because I did not "appear" to be IR and was normal weight blah blah blah.

I finally got my Family Doctor to listen to me and she had also read where Met helps a lot of PCOS patients whether they appear to be IR or not, Thin or Obese....bottom line is that it DOES help. I also feel that if Met does not seem to be helping you, you've either not given it enough time or you're not on high enough a dosage. If you are truly PCOS...it will eventually help.

I am one of the lucky ones if the fact that I have not had many S/E at all. I did have a horrible experience with greasy food once or twice and did get sick in the stomach one time but that was because I took it on an empty stomach. My advice, start SLOW. Slowly increase, 250mg, 500mg, 750mg, 1000mg so on and so on. Also drink LOTS of water and definitely eat a decent sized meal with it.

Don't give up on it!!!!!

I am now seeing a different RE and I don't know what their recommendation is going to be but our next step with the old RE was IVF......now with the Met who knows, maybe I'll even give Clomid a try again in conjunction with the Met. It just might be my miracle combination.

Default More Positive About Met

I was in the D-Chiro trial without much luck (actually gained weight). After the trial, I asked to be put on Met. I had a pretty negative experience with fatigue and bad GI side effects for 4 months. I finally got fed up and stopped taking it for about a year.
When I went back for my yearly exam, I was in a panic because I had gained 16 lbs. I decided to give Met another go in August (which my gynocologist combined with Yazmin this time). The combination of Met with Yazmin seems to be the trick for me. I still have GI problems, but my periods have stablized and I have lost 21 lbs with no conscious change in diet/exercise routine. My fiance and I are not trying to conceive yet, but hopefully with a slow & continual weight loss the Yaz won't be neccessary to keep my cycles in line in the future.
I have noticed my appetite is down and the cravings for carbs/sugars are almost non-existent. It was so frustrating (before Met) with food consumption because I felt like I ate a fraction of a normal person without any weight loss and sometimes weight gain. Though the side effects of Met are annoying at times, the positives certainly outweigh the negatives.
My doctor has told me that using the time release Gloucophage (Met is the generic) can help with the side effects. To my knowledge, a generic is not available yet, but it might be an option to those with bad reactions.
Happy New Year!!
Amanda

Thank you for posting all of your awesome success stories! This is helping me to be more brave about starting my met tomorrow. I was so afraid, but you have all helped me see that the benifits can outweigh the side effects!

Please, please keep the success stories coming and I look forward to telling you all about my own success story.

Default AF after an absence of 9 months!

Just wanted to share with everyone about my success with Met since I know how important it is to hear the good side of things with all the scary mentions of side effects etc.

I was diagnosed with PCOS with IR in August 2006 by my family doctor after many frusterating visits with previous doctors who just told me to take BCP and that being irregular was normal. Now I realize that not everyone's AF comes every 28 days, but 9 months between AFs is not normal, I don't care what doctor tells me it is. So finally, this doctor knew something about PCOS, and saw that I had all the classic symptoms. So she did some blood work and referred me to a specialist - and endocrinologist here in Denver, CO. (Dr. Rees-Jones is so wonderful!). I couldn't get in to see him until early October, but when I did, he did some blood tests and prescribed Metformin. I worked up to 3 of the 500 mg tablets each day of Metformin for a few months and saw positive changes (like no low blood sugar episodes that I used to have all the time, and I stopped gaining weight, which is wonderful even though I haven't lost that much yet). When I went back in December for my two-month checkup my doctor changed my prescription to Avandamet (which has metformin and something else in it). I now take one pill with 1000 mg of Met and 2mg of the other stuff twice each day, so 2000 mg of Met daily. I hadn't had a period since March, but I noticed last week that I had sore nipples, and wondered if I was going to get my AF, and just as I suspected, I got AF today (Dec 29)...my first one on my own (without BCP) in YEARS! So, I am positive that the Metformin is working for me.

I hope you will all eventually have the successes that I am now seeing. I am going to get my working out/exercising program going so that I can start seeing real results with my weight, but at least my body is starting to get back to "normal". If you are reading this and haven't taken Met yet, don't be too scared about the side effects. If you take the pill with food (after you've eaten some, but before you are finished) the effects are minimal. The only times it has been really bad - and by that I mean feeling crampy and having diarrhea, it is because I ate too many carbs in one sitting and not enough protein or fat with it. Otherwise, some days I don't notice at all, and other times my stomach just feels a little weird or achy, but nothing too terrible. I think the Met works best if you take it before you eat instead of while you eat, but work up to that after you know how you feel with the Met in general. If I know I have an important meeting or something I don't want to take a chance of feeling bad during, I'll take my pill during my meal, and make sure to eat balanced protein, fat, and carbs to keep things in check. Otherwise, I try to take it before I eat to get the most benefit from it.

Well, I hope that my first, simple success encourages those of you that needed it, that Metformin is totally worth the sometimes less than fun side effects. Hopefully I don't have to take it the rest of my life - as I'd like to exercise and lose weight so that I can regulate my body from then on, but for now, I'll gladly take the Met!

Good luck!

Before taking met, I was over weight (223), has alot of facial hair, a dark patch of skin on the back of my neck, and my hair was falling out of my head like crazy (enough to stop the water from going down the drain while I was in the shower. I could really fill the tub without putting the water stopper up.

Now, i am sitll over weight but, I have lost 33 pounds since taking met and my facial hair is now successfully being treated with lazer hair removal (YAY!!! I no longer need to shave my face twice a day..everyday), the dark patch of skin on my neck that was there for about 10 years is now completely gone, and not much hair falls out of my head anymore (a few strands but not enough to fill the tub with water).

I think met is the WONDER MED for PCOS. I had tried everything to lose weight for many years and no way was it going to happen. The same as the dark patch on my neck. I went to a dermatologist and was prescribed a expensive cream and a pill and it did not work at all.

I hope everyone who takes met has the same success as we are having.

Good luck to all my cysters and have a HAPPY ,HEALTHY , AND SAFE NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(((HUGS)))

Julie

Well, it's been almost two weeks since I went back on met... I have a few random abdominal cramps but they're just like mild to moderate period pains.. sometimes they're worse than others and I need to stop and wait for them to fade.. but hey, it's not very often and might not be related to the met at all and be post preg pains instead.. hard to tell.
I'm feeling pretty good though.. not that hungry... in fact i'm not really eating.. which I know is bad. But, i'm happy to be back on my medication... now I just have to wait to see if my next af is a killer or not... eek

Well, I am finally up to 1500 mg of met daily. Only felt sick for one week on this dose and now I feel great. I have been on met almost 8 weeks now and have lost 10 lbs. I am very excited about that since I have not been able to loose weight at all for 6 years. !!!! YIPPIE. I hope it keeps coming off. I am still exercising about 5 times a week.

Thanks to all for their stories and encouragement. This site helps so much. You don't feel so alone out there .

I've been on met for about 6 weeks at the suggestion of my endo (whom I see for thyroid problems). I was actually hesistant - I hate to take something just for weight loss when I've always *assumed* it's just my fault. But when I finally went majorly hypothyroid (after being hyper years ago), I gained so much weight. After 7-8 years and finally going out of the "normal" lab range for thyroid, I was referred to a new endo. (She's great...she is Russian and it's interesting to see how the approach of that practice is different from others).

So far I've lost 10 pounds without any change in diet, exercise, etc.. I also have IBS and so didn't want to change everything at once for fear I'd be in the bathroom 24/7! I started on 500 for a week, then 1000 for two, 1500 for two, and then next week I'll be at 2000. Labs don't show any IR problems, etc., I've never had a fertility or cycle problem (except related to thyroid), but she thinks I still show some hallmarks of PCOS/IR - weight location, some hair issues, skin tags, etc..

Besides the minor weight loss (hopefully more later!), I have also noticed a marked reduction in PMS. Mine is usually terrible - what a nice surprise that has been!

I've had gastrointestinal issues with gas, bloating, and diarrhea with the metformin, especially if I'm not careful about "heavy" foods, but with the IBS it's not a big change for me. In fact, the met actually helps regulate the IBS a bit due to timing. I do notice increased hunger when I first up the met each time, but that goes away and I find that it then just regulates my appetite - I know when I'm hungry, get full quickly, and then cannot eat until I am truly hungry again. A miracle after always being in a state of hunger...

I also have a problem sometimes with water retention ( I have some other health issues which contribute to that occasionally) and take meds for blood pressure, but I've also noticed that since taking met I don't seem to swell as much. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but I'm going to pay closer attention.

So, I've had some weight loss and am hoping that as I add dietary changes and increase exercise - well, I'm eager to see the results! Good luck to everyone.

I've been taking Met since Nov 1/2006 and after about two weeks of taking it AF came and I had a cycle that lasted 30 days. Before being on Met since I was 17 years old I used to go up to 6 months without AF and when she did come she once lasted 3 months.

I've also found that I have way more energy then I did before. Also my chart noted that ovulation occured in my previous cycle so hopefully this is making things happen. Met has been a really good experience for me so far. Hopefully I will get a BFP soon.

Great thread!

I have been anovulatory since about 17 when I had my one and only AF. The first time I went on Met in 2004, I didn't really give it too good of a shot. I took it for about a month or two. I did get my AF after a month. Happy surprise, but I never got another.

Fast forward to fall of 2006. Went back on 1000mg of Met. Got AF in Nov, and then again in Dec. I am 30 years old, and it was the first time I EVER experienced back to back AF at a regular interval. I am very excited and hopeful that this time will finally result in pregnancy. I also have lost 7 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I am attributing that to Met. I also cut out sugar, but pre Met that wouldn't have made a difference.

I am now on 1500mg of Met as of January per my new RE.

Taking met has contributated to me losing over 70lbs(which I gained 45lbs back with my pregnancy!) If it wasnt for taking met I wouldnt have lost the weight and in losing the weight helped clomid to jumpstart my cycles. At first when I started losing and was on clomid--i wasnt oing, but after losing more and more weight and increasing the clo thinking that was the problem I finally started oing. I went to the doc and he told me that I had lost too much weight for the dose of clo I was on but I didnt want to back down. Anyways, to make a long story short I ended up getting preggers with clomid and met and losing weight. I took met through my whole pregnancy up until a week before my c-section. I then waited my 6 weeks before going back on met. In that 6 weeks time I could tell a big difference when I wasnt on my met. I ate constantly!! Anyways, cravings are under control and I am finally starting to lose the baby weight again!

Just wanted to update my met success. After being on met for 3 months I got a BFP. There is hope out there and I owe it all to met and the support from all my cysters. Not to mention my dh the spem donor ( and much much more) but I feel the support and confidence I get here is so uplifting it helps reduce the stress and helps the met work.

Thank you all for being so great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
