hi my names jennifer im only 15 and started metformin in december 2005 when i was 14 . it really worked i lost a total of 42 pounds with out diet or exercise in 4 monthes i went from 206 lbs to 164 1bs i couldnt of been any happier
if you want check out my thread called diabetic recipes i will be posting a new recipe each week even if you arent diabetic i luv them jennifer
I'm so happy when I read success stories!! Yeah for everyone here!
I'm still trying to lose the 30 pounds I gained since my accident in May 2005. Since it's Lent, it will make it even easier! :-) No, in all seriousness, after reading about the possible yeast overgrowth I most likely have, I started making a concerted effort to eat better and exercise more, and I am sticking to it.
I'm sure it has been stated already *somewhere* on this board, but to save time since I have to run to my next class, when is the best time to take Metformin? Before or after a meal? I always forget to take it before... :-(
ok. Bye! and thanks!

Amy ~ Most folks seem to have fewer GI issues when taking Met with food. I didn't have a lot of side effects myself, so it was less of a concern for me.

I have been on met since Nov 2006. I have lost 20 lbs and have had 3 cycles 28-33 days apart!!! THis is the first time in my life that I have had 3 cycles in a row. I feel so much better. My hair stopped falling out and acne disappeared. I believe that met is a miracle Drug!!!

I'm starting Met on Tuesday. I'm so nervous, scared and excited. It's hard for me to believe met will work for me. I hear all of you, and seriously gives me hope.
I've been living with PCOS for over ten years and every year is harder. Ever since I turned 25, my acne has gotten worse and spread to other parts of my body. I also developed skin tags, dark skin patches, and of course weight gain. I work out four days a week, and eat salads all day, all to maybe lose a measly 2 lbs a month.
I'm really looking forward to this, and hope to be as successful as you have been.
i would love to talk to u. i have just started my metformin 6 mths ago, your story is so wonderfull and your family is beautifull. i already have a hubby but i need to work on the children part. i dont get a period b/c of my PCOS, but i have for the first time with no help with metformin. i started 6 days ago. do you think that means that i am ovulation? is that even possible? please write to me i am desperate. you can also call me if you want 813 404 8664
Hello,
I have been on met since 11/06, but was on injectibles, so never got the chance to see if it regulated me. This is an off cycle and I got a positive opk today (after a week of negatives). This is also the same cycle day that I would get a positive when I was on clomid.
I have read that women with PCOS (with elevated LH levels) will sometimes get false positives, but would the met negate that? Also, from what I remember my LH/FSH levels were fine. I am not IR, but was "clinically" diagnosed due to medical history and cycstic ovaries.
I'm ironically going to my RE's office today for the IVF interview and supposed to be doing IVF in late April. However, I am going to bring them up to speed on what is going on. Maybe they'll do a sono to see if I have a mature follie.
What do you guys think?
In 2004, I was diagnosed with PCOS. In 2005, doc wasn't so sure. In 2006, was rediagnosed by another doc for PCOS. I was just put on Spiro (50mg) and met (1000mg). Met didn't work previously, but it could have been that it wasn't combined with something else, or health conditions were different. I just wanted to know if anyone is taking the same combo of medications and if so, how is it working? I'm really hoping this helps with my hair, acne, and weight problems.
My RE asked me to repeat my bloodwork before the next appointment to make sure met is working. Im insulin resistant. Im so happy that my levels are restoerd to normal and now I can go on to Clomid etc
Before levels-
Fasting Insulin- 16.17 (normal below 10)
Insulin after 1 hr glucose load- 189.22 (should be 40-75)
After levels-
Fasting insulin- 6.76
After glucose load (1 hr)- 63.14
He also asked me to do some liver function tests and they are also normal. Yahoooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Met works and so does Avandia

I have PCOS and was wondering if those of you who have hair loss and have started taking metformin have noticed a significant change. I am really struggling with this issue, cry all the time. I was on metformin a year ago for about two months but my doctor wouldnt work with me so I quit taking it. She had me on a really high dose and I couldnt adjust, threw up all the time. Anyway, we have since then moved and going to look for a new doctor and thinking of trying Met again. Balding is the worse side effect of PCOS for me, I cant hide it! Looking for hope.
Thanks

I'm a newbie...I just got diagnosed with PCOS yesterday. The doctor said "lose weight and this will get better. Here is some Metformin you can take if you want to help start you weight loss. Take half in morning and half at night (500mg tabs) and I will see you in 3 months". Is this enough 500 mg a day? Should I find another doctor? I thought Metformin did a lot of other things for PCOS not just for appetite control??!!!
500mg is a good place to start. I think most of us get up to 1500mg, and some go up to 2000mg. Starting slow will help lessen any side effects you may have with Met. Met does do a lot more than appetite control, but losing weight does seem to improve PCOS symptoms. Met may be able to help you with that even at a 500mg dose. If you do well on the 500mg, you may be able to ask your doctor to increase your dose. I'm guessing he was going to do that in 3 months anyway, but I don't know that there is any reason to wait that long. Good luck!

Met XR has really worked for me! It has helped control my IR, reduced hair growth, slow down my thining hair and acne. I have managed to lose 63 lbs in 6 months! My cycles are also between 35-40 days now. I will take some time to work, and the s/e are not great, but well worth it. Try Met XR, if you experience bad S/E, it's easier on the system!
Hope this helps!

I have been considering met for a few months, I had ectopic in november after taking clomid and it made me nervous that the clomid had something to do with it. I have a good feeling about met and from hearing all the success story decided today to call my doc and get put on it. Hopefully I will start in the next couple days and will keep you updated.
