i have been on met for 2 cycles- for the 1st cycle - 1 pill of 500mg a day for 30 days and the 2nd cycle of 1000mg (2x500) for 30 days. no side effects - except the occasional diaherra (sorry!) and i have noticed somewhat less facial hair.

i did not get my period.

i am seeing my dr on saturday to ask for an increase in dose and perhaps even ask for clomid.

i've been exercising and watching what i eat and no weight loss

has anyone else had the same problems? i feel like i'm not going to respond to this treatment.

I never realized the impact these pills had until my excessive hair growth returned (i even had laser hair removal done previously and to my dismay - most of my hair returned). anyhow, my doctor has put me on metformin - i am on 1000 a day and hoping to increase to 1500 by saturday.

i had not had my period yet - has anyone else suffered the same? should i ask for clomid to help?

also - i wanted to start monitoring my body temp. - sorry if this is a naive question - but i understand that our body temp is regularly 98.5 and what should it be around to understand if i'm ovulating or not. sorry i'm confused on certain things and appreciate any responses.

hello.

welcome to soulcysters.

ya pills r bad, specially for pcos women. i think pills triggered pcos in me.
how long have u been taking metformin?
my doc told me that it will take 2 months to bring back period, but i got it after 1 1/2 month after taking met. if u r taking longer than 2 months then u should see ur doc so they give u another medicine to induce ur period.

i started to chart my 1st cycle on ovusoft (TCOYF) (15day trial). i felt that 15 days r not enough so first 2 weeks i wrote my temp down on paper, so i can have 1 month atleast to see how this software is. http://www.ovusoft.com/

http://www.ovusoft.com/ourtcoyf/gallery/

i also charted my temps on http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ just to compare both b4 buying ovusoft ($40 US)

my conclusion is that i find ovusoft much better n feel satisfied. i did not like fertility friend. i think TrishainAZ (if i m not wrong) also mentions of ovusoft, and it is true that ovusoft does have very good reviews. u can also check out this thread. Fertility Friend versus OvuSoft

the trial of my ovusoft has ended. i plan to take HTP after 1 week. if i am not preg then i am gona buy it.

u also ask about body temp that wat it should be on day of ovulation. everyone's body temp is different, so its different for everyone. my body temp stays toward the low side, n i see other women having high temps.

i hope this is helpful to you. u can ask anything else if u want know...

There is controversy on BCP- my doc thinks they are fine but some don't.

It was not me that talked about ovusoft... but it was me that doesn't really like fertility friend all that much (I've never used ovusoft.. so don't know about that one) I just LOVE the book Taking Charge of your fertility and you can chart yourself (although honestly, I'm down to really just paying attention to my cervical fluid now.. but you can learn about that in the book too)

katenc - BC pills made me feel "normal" - got my period like clockwork and hair growth diminished. I was on diane 35 (when i lived in Canada) and then yazmin (when i moved to the US). BCP was not bad for me at all. it was only after i got off of them did i start feeling the symptoms of PCOS.

I am on my second week of Metformin and the only side effects are excessive bathroom visits (not the kind you take your time on) and food diversion. I dont like to eat anymore. I eat because I have to but only want half of my normal intake. Im not complaining about this at all. I am sure it will help me to lose weight....even though I only need to lose about 10-15 at the most. I got my period last week for the first time in over two years so after it was over I checked to see if I was ovulating and that day I was not. But the next day, I had this feeling that something was different so we ***TRIED*** but I still dont know if I was ovulating. I just want to see if a miracle happens. I am going to stay on Metformin until I have to change methods....so far I'm on 1000mg a day.

I am praying really hard as I watch (5) of my best friends have babies only weeks apart and as I prepare to pack my husband for yet another deployment to Afghanistan that God will grant me with a miracle army brat as well.

I found out last July that I have PCOS, I was placed on Met which was good, I did not gain or lose weight which is my struggle. I take 2000mg/day. I was having bad cravings for food and told my Endo about this, she suggested I also be on Byetta. I love it, I have lost 18 lbs this past month and I have only been on it for 3 weeks now. I am not to fond of the fact I cant eat carbs, if I do I get sick real bad. But, sometimes there has to be a sacrifice to get what we want. Is there anyone else out there who is taking Byetta and on Met? How do you take in carbs without getting sick? The food is starting to get to me.

I was not losing either and when I saw my endo the next time she suggested Byetta, it works good. I get no appetite hardly, I have to force myself to eat. It is an injection shot I take 2 times/day. But I have lost 18 lbs, when I had no luck with just met.

Hi everyone! I am desperately TTC! I was taking Metformin and Clomid before but stopped when my husband left to work abroad. It's been two years now. He's coming home maybe around June or July and I want to take Metformin again. I haven't been to the doctor yet. I plan on changing my OB into a fertility specialist doc. I hope this time it would work for us.

Hey all just thought id pop by and catch up...well, im on week 5/6 and I got my AF today, which is really good considering the last cycle was 3 months. I got AF 28th December then again today so around 6 weeks I work that out...which is brilliant!

Im still at 10lb weight loss too, but havent been as good this week as I was the first few weeks so that might be why my weight has come to a plateau..I still make sure all my meals are under 32g carbs and mix half that of protein.

We are going to start working out from home a few times a week and see if that can shift it some more as got about another 40lb to lose in the next 8 months for the wedding, but so far so good!

Smile I love Metformin!!!

Ok 2 weeks down and I cant beleive I fought against taking this med for years!! I am 11 pounds thinner my crazy out of control appetite is gone my mood swings are gone and best of all I ovulated.Today. 2 lines on the stick obvious fertile cervical mucus.. the whole bit! i have had almost no side effects and i thank YOU ladies for that as I took your advice and started with a very low dose and gradually built up and I take it in the middle of the meal. I started with 250 2 xs a day then 750 (250 am and 500 pm) for week and was planning to start 1000 next week but am going to wait and see. This might be enough.Liver and kidney tests came back perfect so no longer fretting about lactic acidosis.Found out from my do that they are studying metformins effects on other aspects of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome because it seems to cure fatty liver and lower bp in a great # of PCOS patients. so bonus thereAnyway if you are waffling just try it... Its helping me a lot. I feel like I am getting my life back!!

Talking Thanks!

Thank you so much to everyone that has shared their story. This truly has given me hope about my future and plans.

I was dx in 2004 because I had gained almost 70lbs in about a 2 year period. I used to be on the Depo shot from the age of 16-19 so I just thought it was nice not to have a cycle. But after I started getting very coarse hair on my arms and buttock thats when I became more concerned. My eating habbits were not very healthy the college diet to be exact but it wasnt any different from when I was 18 and 148lbs.

I was told that I could only treat the symptoms. I couldnt afford laser hair removal and my insurance WOULD NOT cover BCP. Alot of my doctors really didnt have too much insight on this disorder. I worked with the doctor who was my PCP as well, we even went to the same gym... so he knew I was doing tons of cardio. No matter what I did nothing seemed to work or keep the weight off. So one of our patients came in and said she had been put on Met... I dont remember the dosage cuz it was so long ago. But am I ever glad I remembered the name of MET!!!

Finally!!!! I was sick and tired of all these issues and the weight. So I got an awesome PCP now. And the day after thanksgiving 07 asked him about it and he put me on 500mg a day. My appetite was surpressed so I lost 7 lbs the first week and a half. I did experience ALOT of GI problems, but I figured I would stick it out for atleast a month until I adjusted. I was sick with pneumonia for 4 months prior to starting. being that my DR was also board certified in Nutrition and Fitness I didnt question him right away for not allowing me to increase the dosage to atleast 1000mg. However, I went on vacation and wanted to drink alcohol so i stopped taking it for 2 weeks. SO NOT WORTH IT.

So since I do work in healthcare and I am very knowledgeable on monitoring dosing with other meds... i increased myself to 500mg twice a day just on thursday of this week. I am having the GI issues again right now but the dosage is doubled. I have so far lost about 15-20lbs and have started the South Beach diet. I find that my excess body and facial hair has really been much less of a hassle. My mood swings are better. I love this!!!! Idont care if I have to stay on this regiment for a few years cuz its better than staying at this weight or worse GAINING MORE!

So again thank you!!! Although every person is different and should check with their doctor on ANY regiment or plan... these forums have helped me to give healthcare professionals proof of things that have worked for others. And I say I have to atleast try it ... if it doesnt work I know to try something else. But this is working and I'll keep every one posted on my weight loss. YAY!!!!!!!!!
