I take one in the morning and 2 at dinner for a total of 1500mg. It should be three times daily but I found I was exhausted and had some headaches so I moved it. A few ladies take them like that and found it better. A Vitamin B supplement helps bigtime with the fatigue...PBLayzod is right

I've gotten pregnant so that my babies are due the same month that I started met the following year. How's that for regularity? I guess it takes 3-4 months for my body to react to it, but it sure seems to work as I am now pregnant with my 3rd.
I'm a thin cyster and have never been tested for IR. I've taken different doses (see my signature) based on the latest research at the time I was trying to conceive. I also followed low carb diets, but this last one I wasn't very strict and I exercised. My doctor has me stay on met for the entire pregnancy. Good luck!
Hi Trishain - Congratulations!!!!! Wow, you're staying on 2000mg of met for the entire pregnancy? See this is where I get frustrated with the medical field in regards to PCOS, Met and pregnancy - No one agrees on what is correct! I had one doctor tell me to stop my Met immediately when I found out I was pregnant which I refused to do and then my current doctor said only stay on it for the 1st trimester but now I'm wondering if I should have stayed on it? I'm 16 weeks and so far everything is good but down the road I'm worried about Gest. Diabetes.
Any specific reason your doctor had you continue the Met?

Again, Congrats!!!!
Hi, I just had a pos. pregnancy test and I'm currently on 850 mg of Met. I'm going to call my doctor and find out what they suggest but after reading these threads, it sounds like there are different thoughts on whether or not to stay on Met. This is my first pregnancy so I'm really nervous about miscarriage and don't want to do anything to mess this up.
Any thoughts?
Brooke, stay on the met until at least the 1st trimester, that cuts down m/c rates big time. I wish I was still taking it in December when I got pg, because I m/c'd in March (I was 11w2d, but things didn't seem right from the beginning)

Sorry, I admit, I don't always know the reason for why my doctor has me do stuff! I guess I should research more, but the first time I was so overwhelmed that I didn't know what to do so just followed doctors orders and it worked out so then I just trusted blindly since its been working out so well! You can check some other threads started about met during pregnancy that may have more info. Congrats on your positive!
Hi Brooke, and Congrats on the positive HPT!!!! That's great! And on such a low dose, that's wonderful. Sounds like it only took you one cycle on Met to conceive too which is rare.
I agree with the other poster who told you to stay on Met through the 1st trimester at the very least. There is no disputing the studies that have been done on Met decreasing the chance of miscarriage. Absolutely insist if your doctor gives you a hard time. I actually switched doctors because they were against taking Met anytime throughout a pregnancy which I absolutely can't believe with all the studies out there saying otherwise. Met is a class "B" drug meaning it is safe to take during pregnancy.
My current doctor agreed with me about staying on it through the 1st Tri but then stopping it right around 13 weeks but I didn't just stop immediately I took another 1 or 2 weeks and slowly weaned the dosage down until I stopped completely. I got pg on 2000mg.

Thanks!!
Ugh, this is so frustrating though! I went to the doctor today and he told me to stop taking the metformin and prescribed me progesterone tablets instead. I really don't know what to do...I feel like I should listen to him since he's the doctor but then I hear so many other things. He did tell me I have a high chance of miscarriage because of my PCOS and that's why he prescribed the progesterone. I guess I will follow his advice, wish me luck!!
Im now on 3000mg Metformin.
Im also type II diabetic, thats why Im on Metformin, just happens to help some of my pcos symptoms.
My diabetes team said that the minute I find out that Im pregnant then I am to stop the Metformin and go onto insulin injections.
They said that the occasional woman there stays on it for the pregnancy but they dont have enough proof that its NOT harmful so they want me off of it.
I do realise that its only my clinic saying this and plenty of people stay on it, its just that when Im lucky enough to get pregnant Im gonna do exactly what Im told.
Im miffed Ive not gotten a period yet though, Im getting raging pmt and cramps and loads of vaginal fluid (enough to make me think Im on but Im not) but no period - miffs me off big time.

Brooke- I would never say that I know more than any doctor, but have you at least discussed with him the option of staying on metformin? Maybe you could print out one of the studies on this site and see what he thinks and perhaps he can better explain why it would or would not be a good option for you. I don't know much about progesterone so maybe that will help too? Either way Good luck!
Hi Brooke, Like Trishain said, we would never presume to tell you what to because we are not doctors and I totally think that putting you on Progesterone is a good thing because women with PCOS do tend to have lower progesterone levels after OV and early pregnancy. Mine Prog at 15 dpo was only 15.5 which I was very worried about but my OB kept insisting this was not a low number and normal so early in the pregnancy and did not put me on progesterone tablets but instead kept me on the Met. Not telling you what to do but you're not on a real high dosage of Met so I say what's the harm to just keep taking it through the 1st Tri? I mean, he even said it himself, women with PCOS stand a higher chance of miscarriage.
But I totally understand where you're coming from in wanting to trust your doc and go with his recommendation. I guess I would just question his reasoning more and ask why they think Met is harmful during PG? If there are new studies out suggesting Met is harmful, I'd definitely be interested in knowing about them!!!
Brooke, I completely agree with the previous posters! At least read the studies yourself and decide from there.
Cole, when going off met during pregnancy it increases your risk of a m/c.

Please wish me wonderful baby thoughts! I have decided to follow my doctor's advice and stopped taking the metformin and am taking the progesterone tablets. I'll keep you all posted of my progress. Thanks for your advice!
