My Mood: Points: 238.39 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 238.39 | I highly recommend taking met if you have PCOS despite the possible side effects. I've been taking it now for almost two years. In a year and a half after starting the met, I managed to lose 55 pounds and since have been able to maintain my weight. I find I'm less hungry. I don't think my period's been regulated though...I take too many other things to know or to find out at this point. But I would not stop taking it. My skin is a lot better and lots of things while the symptoms aren't completely gone, they're so much better. And people really take notice! Of course it was tough getting used to taking the met...I worked my way up from one pill a day to three pills a day so now I'm on 1,500 mg. I went a few weeks with a bad stomach but hung in there. I find the metformin easiest to take in the middle of a meal. Met is amazing. I know I wouldn't have lost the weight I did without it and it really got me on the right track. I eat very well...currently trying to work on making exercise a more regular part of my routine but you have to start somewhere. |

My Mood: Points: 698.83 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 698.83 | Hi All,
I'm Amy, 21 from Perth, Australia.
I have had irregular periods throughout my teenage years, however never thought much of it.At about 19 I put on weight and my period decresed in regularity. I had a weight loss operation in October 2007 which made me lose a good amount of weight. I started to worry when i hadnt had a period for 5 months and decided to consult the gyno, the appointment was disappointing as the dr told me i should wait and he was pretty sure my periods would become normal within 12 months. Which i was extremelly disappointed with considering my fiance and I have been ttc for 18 months!!! He informed me I had PCOS.
I consulted my GP about my condition and she decided to put me onto Medformin, which i am taking 3 per day (1500mg). We only started a week or so ago and I had slight discomfort with Metformin but nothing to drastic. We also purchased a saliva ovulation predictor to assist us to know if and when i ovulate. We have done it religiously from day 1 of meformin, yesterday when we did it, it appeared to be the transition period. Then, when I re-did it last night, I had complete furns which 'apparently' meant ovulation, obvioulsy baby dancing occured! and now we're waiting. But I'm not sure if i should trust the results as I did a pee on the stick one and the box said it was negative (even though it was a faint and dark line). This morning I had pain on my left side where my ovary is and i now have a headache, not to sure what to think! So confused and REALLY want to believe that i ovulated!
Has anyone concieved on Metformin within 3 months?
Thanks
Amy xx |

My endocrinologist put me on metformin 500mg. I had minor side effects just stomach pain but they were bareable. I lost 10 pounds in a week which was mostly water weight. I had a big belly it looked like I was pregnant but now it's almost gone. I feel normal again and I've been on it met for almost a month and i feel great i feel like i have more energy and my body feels great. |

Amy xx | I was on Metformin for a few months and the first month my Dr. increased to 1500mgs, she also tried 50 mgs. of Clomid and Whammo...BFP! 1st time!
I didn't try the other months on Metformin, because we were just trying to figure out if it was going to regulate me. I didn't have a period on my own for almost 20 years!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy! |
Thanks so much! I actually did not O until CD 27 or 28 ( I got a positive ovulation predictor test strip on CD 26) and TONS AND TONS of egg white cervical mucus on CD 27. It was strange, I had NEVER experienced that before. It was rather gross, but I couldn't mistake it for anything else.
Remember the Temp shift happens AFTER you O, so that would be to late.
Best wishes!!
p.s. Also, I did the Clomid earlier....don't give up if you think you are not ovulating, it might just be late. My Dr. told me if it didn't happen by CD 21 it probably wasn't going to happen or it would not be a viable egg. Guess who was WRONG!!!!! I was so happy I kept peeing on those test strips!!!

Thanks for all of the posts on here. I just started Metformin last night. I'm supposed to take 500mg twice a day. But after reading so many posts, I decided to start with 500mg at dinner for the next week and then work my way up to the full dose.
I'm really hoping that it will help with weight loss and hopefully soon we will conceive. |

Can you believe I've only been on Metformin for two days, and I woke this morning to my AF!! I'm not really happy about this because I just had it 2 weeks ago. I'm only taking 500mg of Metformin so far and will up it to 1000mg next week. This is not a side effect I want if it means I'm going to get my cycle more than once a month...ugh.
Has this happened to anyone else while taking Metformin?

Points: 123.48 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 123.48 | Gluc worked for me in 4 weeks Hi,
I decided to share my story because your stories provided me with so much hope, so I hope I can be a source of encouragement for someone else.
I am currently not trying to conceive. I need to find a soulmate first. LOL.
I am a thin cyster and I do not suffer from the skin and hair problems often associated with PCOS. I came of the BC pill and my periods became irregular. I was quickly diagnosed with PCOS by my gyn. I went to an endocrinologist who placed me of Gluc XR 500 mg. She strongly recommends the name brand and not the generic, met. She claims to have much better results with brand. The initial plan was for me to increase to 1000 mg after 3 weeks. I tried, but couldn't because the 1000mg dose made me vomit for 5 days straight, so I went back to 500 mg. The 500 mg dose gives me no side effects.
AF came after 4 weeks of being on Gluc and then I had a second AF another 4 weeks later. Prior to Gluc I was inducing AF with prometrium. I have been off the pill for about 1 year now.
Labs before Gluc
Total test 90 (cut off is 76)
Free test 1.3 (cut off is 2.2)
Glucose tolerance test came back a little hypoglycemic, yes hypo and not hyper
Labs 4 weeks after Gluc
Total test 72
Free test 1.1
Labs 8 weeks after Gluc
Total test 45
Free test .3
The endocrinologist wants total test below 40, so I am almost there. Yippie!
I did make some diet changes. I cut back on carbs, particulary I cut back on the amount of juice I drank (no more than 16 ounces a day - drink water or vitamin water instead) and only ate white carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes bread, etc) once a day (1 regular portion). I also now excercise 2-3 a weeks. I didn't exercise before.
I am not taking any supplements beyond a daily vitamin or any other meds for PCOS.
My prayers are with everyone. I wish everyone much success in treating PCOS. |

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Metformin does help, and I'm hoping it's as helpful for you as it was for me! |

Well, i did the saliva test for 7 days now and the ovulation predictor saliva test said I ovulated on day 5 & 6, so now i guess I will be in the 2 week wait or wait for AF! Trying not to hope to much as I have heard so many negative things about the saliva tests and that the stick test i did came back negative.
Fingers crossed,just hoping metformin works!!
