I concieved naturally with the use of metformin. It does do wonders for my mood swings. I have lost about three pounds. I have been on it since 8/05/08 this time. I was on it three years before I got pregnant the first time. I hope this helps.
New to soulcysters but definitely not new to PCOS. I was diagnosed in 1997 and have been on BCP and spironolactone since then but just went on Met this morning. I am a little nervous, to be honest. It is so wonderful to hear all of the good stories. I am not trying to get pregnant (ever) but I am trying to get healthier and hope the Met will help.
I took metformin for awhile and got used to the side affects rather quickly...and acutally got pregnant while on met and clomid first cycle unfortunetly we lost the baby roughly 12 weeks in. I was so depressed and just wanted to give up... so I did... I stopped taking met and my hair growth and weight sky rocketed. It was horrible....plus I hated my doctor who depressed the hell outta me also saying "you'll never had kids"....so finally I got up and said "NO MORE YOU'LL NEVERS!" and I got a new doctor whose put me back on met and giving me hope for the first time in my life that I will have a child if I really want one.
Being on met again I'm having to get used to the nasty little side affects AGAIN...blach...mostly tummy upset nothing I can't deal with...I'm on 500mg now and in a week I will be up to 1,000 and in 3 weeks I will be up to 1500mg....wish me luck, and to all that are pregnant from met CONGRATS to you!!!! Can't wait to see my bfp!!!!

Hi ladies!!! Well i am finally up to 2000 mg a day and the nausea and loose boody are finally over with (yipee!!!) since going up to 1500 I have lost 15 lbs already over the course of 3 weeks and now that i am up to 2000 I am hoping that I will lose even more. I have tried to stay with a low carb diet but its not working because my family always has the "bad" carbs in the house but when i can i choose the good carbs along with fruits and veggies...so hopefully when i start a 100% good diet then I will be ok. I actually decided to use Nutrisystem to see if it will help (has anyone else tried this? did it go well?). So we shall see. The only side effect left from the Metformin is i notice that before i get my period (also good news i have gotten it every month since i started taking met...about 3 days long and about every 35 days) i get EXTREMELY moody in a weepy, crying at sad commercials kinda thing. That is annoying but compared to the other side effects i can be dealt with. Anyway, I just wanted to update on my progress and I hope to report more progress in the weeks to come. Keep it up ladies!!! It works

I have been on metformin since april of 2008 I started out on 1500mg but now on 2000mg only negative side effect is upset stomach time to time but getting better. but the positive is I have lost 48 pounds with dieting I now have a period every month around the same time. before Metformin I couldnt lose weight for nothing I tried everything its amazing started metformin 3 weeks later I started dropping weight.
Ok, so I think I'm ready to post my story! I was diagnosed a little over five years ago. I just knew I had PCOS despite doctors dismissing my initial intuition about it. I was very nervous about starting Metformin, so I decided not to do anything about my diagnosis for several years.
My symptoms got worse a few years back, so I finally gave Metformin a try. I started out on regular Metformin and WOW! The side effects got to me and I stopped taking it a few months in even though it regulated my cycle very quickly.
My symptoms got even worse. My hair started falling out and migrating to new places. I gained 20 pounds and AF would not pay a visit without the help of Provera. I restarted with Metformin XR at a higher dosage this past April. My first cycle on it was 35 days and my cycles have been 24 days ever since! I've also lost over 25 pounds!
In May, I felt what I thought was ovulation, but I really couldn't believe it. I went for my annual visits with my endo and my OB and they both insisted that I must be ovulating. The curiousity was killing me, so I charted for the first time this month and... I OVULATED! I also had my blood tests run and all is normal with the exception of my LH and testosterone levels, which are still slightly elevated.
Both of my doctors have told me to stick with Metformin because they expect everything continual and gradual improvement. Just this week I've noticed that my hair growth/loss is slowing down...
For everyone out there that is scared of Metformin, give it a try and stick to it. Learn about the different kinds of Metformin and learn how to control the side effects. It really works and it's all worth it!

Hey Everyone :-) I just joined SC and I am loving it! I was Diagnosed with PCOS in Feb 2008 and I was told (by a doctor who didn't really know much abt it to begin with) that I didn't need to take metformin bec my labs didn't show insulin resistance. Has anyone gone through this? Should I go ahead and ask to take it anyway? I read that for some people it helped with hair loss and weight loss and I struggle with both. I am desperate!! :-( Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi there, YES GO FOR IT.
I was walking around for 10 years feeling like utter s***. About 2 year ago I did alot of research on insulin resitence and I knew that this was my problem. I had a glucose test done which was normal, all my bloods were coming back normal but the way I was feeling was terrible. I could not get enough of sugar, constantly tired, moody, you name it I felt it. I was always told to just diet, cut out the junk etc. The final straw was when a consultant at a hospital told me it was all in my head and could be emotionally related and wanted to refer me to an obese clinic for counselling. Needless to say I never went back.
To make a long story short I told my GP about what the hospital said and begged her to put me on this stuff even if only for a month to see. She gave in and I have been on Met for 7 weeks now and I feel amazing, I no longer have to be eating every hour, I no longer crave the sugar. I have lost 24lb in total and yes I have been sticking to a low fat diet but it has not been hard at all cause I am not craving. I had family over on hols with me for 3 weeks and I ate take-aways, the odd bar of choc, I did not watch my diet at all. I never gained so much as a pound. If I was not on Met I would have put on at least half a stone and more.
This medication has changed my life. The funny thing is now is that my GP is totally and utterly confused as to why this medication is working so well for me and NOW wants to run all the proper tests for IR. How mad is that.
In 2004, I was diagnosed with PCOS. In 2005, doc wasn't so sure. In 2006, was rediagnosed by another doc for PCOS. I was just put on Spiro (50mg) and met (1000mg). Met didn't work previously, but it could have been that it wasn't combined with something else, or health conditions were different. I just wanted to know if anyone is taking the same combo of medications and if so, how is it working? I'm really hoping this helps with my hair, acne, and weight problems.
I have just been rx spiro and met. How have you been doing since you've been on these two?

WOW, that is crazy! Thank you soo much for the advice! I seriously was at a loss. I guess doctors really don't know everything ;-) I feel the exact same way.. crazy, moody, ALWAYS tired, and no one around me understands. I think they think I'm just making up excuses. Ugh. The good news is, I just found out that a PCOS center just opened where I live so this might make things easier. Your post has given me hope...thanks again!!
