Just wanted to comment on your last question. Get this........I went to a Reproductive Endocrinologist and asked if I had insulin resistance and if I should take Metformin. He told me that my labs did not indicate that I was IR and that I would not benefit from Metformin. WELL, I later went to an OBGYN, who is well informed about PCOS, and she told me that diagnosing IR can be a little tricky sometimes and when diagnosing one needs to take several things into consideration. That said, she also told me that it is OFTEN MISSED BECAUSE PEOPLE WITH PCOS CAN HAVE "LOW NORMAL" LABS. That means that it can look low, but is still considered normal so some docs don't pay attention to it. Not sure if this is the case for you or not, but just thought I would let you know. My doctor put me on Met after that and, I am now 7 months pregnant. Met absolutely worked for me. It regulated my cycles and helped me to ovulate and eventually get pregnant. Every person is different, but this is what happened for me, someone who thought she would NEVER be able to have a baby. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!! AND hang in there! If you feel you need another professional opinion, go for it.

Sincerely,
Kim

Hi Kim,

I am so happy I asked this question, I cannot believe how much this has helped already. Thank you for letting me know about your experience with Met. I really hope that I have the same results as you. I am so happy to hear that you got pregnant!
I have an appt. on Oct. 3 with a PCOS specialist- Thank God! So hopefully he will be able to read the labs accurately :-) Its crazy to think that so many people are suffering when they might not have to. Thanks for the great advice!! I'll keep everyone posted.

Hello ladies! I must agree that the met is a miracle worker. I started taking met on 8/12/08 and got af 8/26/08 and it is still here. Did any of you have this problem? However I am totally psyched because I have lost 5lbs. I try not to eat alot of fried foods (so far so good) and resorted to more greenery and fruit. I love and I do mean love M&M's, Snickers, ice cream, and potato chips, but I even let them go. Maybe not the potato chips, but I did cut out french fries (lol) and I don't eat the chips every day. I walk sometimes and I do crunches on my ab lounge. Good luck to all and to those of us who want kids here's baby dust!!!

ok so my post is not about a success story, but a desire to hear one. I guess I should say a little about myself. I've never officially been diagnosed with pcos (all my doctors say, "it appears as though you have..." ) whatever! i've seen hair on parts of my body that it shouldn't be since 16. I have semi regular periods. Every once in a while I get two a month, but that was resolved with the bc. My doc put me on metformin and I've been committed on it for about a week. But I've been wanting to see any success stories about the hair going away, not so much with losing weight. Has anyone got rid of their hair? PLEASE! i need some sort of assurance that this will be worth it.

Hi there, YES GO FOR IT.

I was walking around for 10 years feeling like utter s***. About 2 year ago I did alot of research on insulin resitence and I knew that this was my problem. I had a glucose test done which was normal, all my bloods were coming back normal but the way I was feeling was terrible. I could not get enough of sugar, constantly tired, moody, you name it I felt it. I was always told to just diet, cut out the junk etc. The final straw was when a consultant at a hospital told me it was all in my head and could be emotionally related and wanted to refer me to an obese clinic for counselling. Needless to say I never went back.

To make a long story short I told my GP about what the hospital said and begged her to put me on this stuff even if only for a month to see. She gave in and I have been on Met for 7 weeks now and I feel amazing, I no longer have to be eating every hour, I no longer crave the sugar. I have lost 24lb in total and yes I have been sticking to a low fat diet but it has not been hard at all cause I am not craving. I had family over on hols with me for 3 weeks and I ate take-aways, the odd bar of choc, I did not watch my diet at all. I never gained so much as a pound. If I was not on Met I would have put on at least half a stone and more.

This medication has changed my life. The funny thing is now is that my GP is totally and utterly confused as to why this medication is working so well for me and NOW wants to run all the proper tests for IR. How mad is that.

i believe in metformin and i have the pregnancy to prove that it works.
when i started metformin my period came a few days later. then this cycle was a very long cycle and i did not think that it was helping at all. i threw in vitex and a few days later i ovulated, that was on day 51 of my cycle. i gave up on this cycle and did not think that there was any chance of me getting pregnant. well after 18 days of high temps and still no period here i am pregnant. we found out the day before our 3rd anniversary so that was a pretty great anniversary gift .

Default So far so good

I've been on Met for 10 days, currently at 750 mg. I have, for the most part stopped the intense carb cravings and I have started spotting after 6 years without a period at all. Other than one minor bout of intense nausea (I think I didn't eat) my experience has not been negative at all. So far so good! I go up to 1000 mg on Monday.

I wish I was 30 lbs. lighter by day 3 also...LOL. But seriously, as long as I have been eating fairly regularly, I am not nauseous - though tonight I had my first upset stomach. Also - I can't believe how freakin' tired I am but I am so optimistic about the Met working for me. Especially since my cravings have disappeared so quickly. You know, I was so sure I just was not disciplined. So incredibly demoralizing. Then to find out with a pill that treats insulin resistance, I feel like what I imagine other women do - they get hungry, eat and then aren't hungry anymore...I just never really knew what that felt like, which really didn't help my 18 year struggle with bulimia.

I'm, again, super optimistic.

Good luck Rebecca!

thank you so much sophie1 for your understanding and support! it's nice to know i'm not the only one who wants to be 30 pounds lighter in 3 days. i just started the met last wed. and zero side effects, except for minor (itty bitty) stomach upset, on a scale of 1-10, it would be a 1. no metallic taste, nothing. it's nice to know this website exsits, because it's nice to read other people's struggles so i don't feel all alone!

Question

Well, Where to start. I am new here on soulcysters and I am hoping that this will be a new way for me to gain hope...Lets start from the beginning, I started my menses when I was 8 years old...on Christmas day and I was the most miserable kid in the world that day but, from that day on little did I know I was never going to have a "regular" menses. I went on ocp's when I was 13 until I was 17 years old when I met my now hubby. May 25 2007 I stopped in hopes of getting pg with my husband...since my mother had told me time after time if I had sex and missed a bc pill I WOULD get pg I thought that as soon as Id stop them Id get pg. WRONG!

I have been actively trying since May 25 2007 and I have had no luck yet...but March of this year my endocrinologist that diagnosed me put me on Metformin ER 500mg and told me to titrate up to 4Xdaily.Im having a bit of a problem taking it daily and not getting dehydrated but Im seriously buckeling down.I realy want to know how long it took for people to get pregnant after starting Metformin? Some days I just feel like giving up, like it will never happen..My husband gets this look on his face that breaks my heart when he sees a baby..I just dont know anymore if it will ever happen. I blame myself alot but I guess I just gotta stick with taking my Met daily.

I would love to hear from you with your success stories so maybe I can have a bit more motivation to keep at it.

Thank you so much and baby dust to all

Happily married
